Fort Myers, Fla. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision in conference play to the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles Sunday morning from the FGCU Tennis Complex.
Upstate falls to 5-12 on the season and 1-2 in conference play, while Florida Gulf Coast improves to 14-5 overall and 4-0 in the league.
The match resumed at 9 a.m. Sunday morning after being suspended the previous night due to rain with the Spartans trailing 1-0. The Eagles began the match on Saturday by winning the doubles point after taking the number two and three matches. In the number one matchup, Ramon Simonetti and Ankush Arora were down 4-3 to Andres Alfonzo and Ezequiel Cerrini when FGCU captured the doubles point and the match was halted.
Simonetti, playing at the number one position, earned Upstate's point in singles competition as he defeated Ricky Ventura in three sets. Simonetti started the match by winning the first set 6-4 before falling in set two 6-2. The third set would go into a tiebreaker with Simonetti picking up the 6-2 triumph, and taking the set 7-6.
Lenhard Haupt dropped a tough three-set match at number four to Oliver Landert featuring a second set tiebreaker. After falling in the first set 6-3, Haupt responded to win the second 7-6 after posting an 11-9 victory in the tiebreaker. Landert would capture the match following a 10-7 win in the third set.
The Spartans travel to Nashville, Tenn. on Thursday, Apr. 7 to face Lipscomb at 2 p.m.
