Nashville, Tenn. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team scored a 6-1 conference win on the road Thursday afternoon over the Lipscomb Bisons from the Huston-Marsh-Griffith Tennis Center.
Upstate improves to 6-12 overall and 2-2 in the A-Sun, while Lipscomb falls to 6-10 on the season and 0-4 in conference play.
The Spartans cruised to the doubles point after winning at the number one and three matches to go ahead of the Bisons 1-0. The number one combination of Ramon Simonetti and Ankush Arora got things started for Upstate by defeating Alejandro Manzanares and Philippe Courteau by a score of 6-1. Jamie Yates and Rajanvir Dharni, playing in the number three match, captured the doubles point by winning 6-4 over Daniel Cardenas and Thais Minet. Lenhard Haupt and Ignacio Garrido were leading their number two match against John Tougher and Rob Mitchell 5-2 when the match was halted.
The Spartans would win five singles matches to earn the 6-1 victory heading into their home finale on Saturday. Garrido and Yates put Upstate ahead 3-0 after their straight set victories in the number five and three matches. Garrido topped Minet 6-0, 6-4 and Yates won 6-3, 6-1 over Courteau.
After Lipscomb earned a point in the number four match, Arora sealed the Spartan victory by posting a 7-5, 6-4 triumph in straight sets against Manzanares. Dharni and Simonetti finished off the match with back-to-back three set victories to give Upstate the win. Dharni defeated Tougher 3-6, 6-3, 2-1 playing at the number six position, and Simonetti closed out with a 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 win during the number one singles contest.
The Spartans host Kennesaw State in their final home match of the regular season on Saturday at 2 p.m. Upstate will hold its Senior Day festivities prior to the match honoring Dharni, Simonetti and Yates.
