Nashville, Tenn. - Anthony Vaglica drove in three runs while the USC Upstate baseball team took advantage of eight Lipscomb walks, and five wild pitches, for a 7-6 victory at Ken Dugan Field on Friday night.
Upstate improves to 15-15 and 1-2 in the Atlantic Sun while matching their 2015 win total. Lipscomb falls to 16-14 and 0-1.
After Upstate went down in order in the top-half of the first, Lipscomb got back-to-back singles followed by a walk to load the bases. Tevin Symonette got the Bisons on the board with a sacrifice fly before a strikeout and groundout ended the inning.
Charlie Carpenter led off the second inning with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a Cody Brittain base hit. After a wild pitch advanced the runners 90 feet, Carpenter plated the first Upstate run of the game on a Zach Krider groundout. Vaglica gave the Spartans a 2-1 lead on a groundout that scored Brittain.
After the Spartans stranded a runner in scoring position in the third inning, Carpenter led off the fourth with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Brittain reached on an infield hit before Vaglica lined a double off of the left field wall to give Upstate a 4-1 lead.
Zeke Dodson reached on a single with one out in the fourth inning and scored on an Allan Hooker home run to bring the Bisons within a run at 4-3.
J.J. Shimko led off the Upstate fifth inning with an infield single before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Jordan Ford followed with a walk before the fourth wild pitch of the night by Lipscomb starter Cody Glenn advanced the runners into scoring position. The Bisons would call Kyle Weller out of the bullpen and he recorded two outs thanks to a groundout and strikeout before a walk to Brittain loaded the bases. Weller got out of the inning unscathed after he struck out Zach Krider.
Upstate added two runs in the sixth inning. Vaglica opened the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt before Jordan Miller was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game. Shimko just missed a home run as he hit a double off of the top of the right field wall to bring home Vaglica. Ford walked to load the bases before a walk to James Fowlkes scored Miller. Lipscomb got out of the inning thanks to a double play.
Devon Ortiz led off the eighth inning with a walk before stealing second base and advancing to third base on a groundout for the second out of the inning. Ortiz would score on the fifth wild pitch of the night by Lipscomb for the seventh run of the game for Upstate.
Lipscomb answered with two runs in the bottom-half of the inning. After a strikeout by Kevin Hickey began the inning, Adam Lee reached on a single followed by a walk to Symonette. The runners would advance on a wild pitch before a Dodson infield single scored Lee. Hickey struck out Von Watson for the second out of the inning before an Elijah Willingham wild pitch scored Symonette. Willingham got out of the inning thanks to a strikeout.
After Upstate went down in order in the ninth, Willingham got a pair of pop outs before issuing a walk. A wild pickoff attempt by Richie Lacell followed by a hit batter gave Lipscomb runners at the corners. Lipscomb would score a run on a balk before a groundout ended the game.
Vaglica went 1-for-3 with a double, run scored and three RBI. Shimko was 2-for-4 with a single, double and RBI. Brittain finished 2-for-2 with two singles and two runs scored.
Dodson went 2-for-4 with two singles. Allan Hooker went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Symonette was 1-for-2 with a single, run scored and RBI.
Tyler Jackson improves to 4-2 after allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and eight strikeouts in seven innings. Lacell recorded his sixth save after recording the final out of the game. Glenn (2-1) took his first loss of the season, allowing four runs on five hits with two walks, four strikeouts and four wild pitches in four innings.
