Macon, Ga. – Despite the seventh straight double-double from Madison Haake, the USC Upstate volleyball team dropped its final match of the Mercer Invite on Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 (19-25, 25-16, 21-25, 20-25) defeat to the host Mercer Bears inside Hawkins Arena.
Upstate falls to 6-9 on the season while Mercer improves to 8-4.
HAAKE NAMED TO MERCER INVITE ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
- Haake was awarded for her performance during the two-day tournament by being selected to the Mercer Invite All-Tournament Team.
- It is the second All-Tournament Team honor for Haake this season after being named to the Wildcat Classic All-Tournament Team, as well as the Tournament MVP, last weekend.
- Haake had a double-double in all three matches this weekend, and compiled 114 assists, 46 digs, 15 kills, 12 total blocks and six service aces.
STATS OF THE MATCH
- Haake led the Spartans with her 11th double-double of the season on 45 assists and 11 digs.
- Emily Koelling contributed a team-high 14 kills to go with a .542 hitting percentage, while Montana Swanson tied her career-high of 13 kills. Swanson also recorded her sixth double-double of the year after finishing with 15 digs.
- Morgan Macgilvary had a match-high 15 kills to lead the Bears offensively. Hannah Noon dished out 29 assists and Tori Penrod added 27 digs.
- Mercer out-hit Upstate .285 to .228, but the Spartans held a 7-6 advantage in service aces.
SET-BY-SET BREAKDOWN
- Set One: Upstate scored the first three points of the first set before Mercer used a 9-5 run to lead 9-8 on a kill from Macgilvary. The Spartans responded by recording the next five points to take their largest lead of the set, 13-9, courtesy of Koelling's kill. The Bears would even the score again at 15-15 and led to a 6-1 run as they extended their advantage to 21-16. Macgilvary gave Mercer the 25-19 win on her kill.
- Set Two: The teams traded the initial 12 points of the second set before Upstate raced out to a 16-10 lead after going on a 10-4 run, capped by a kill from Haake. The Bears then scored the next three points forcing the Spartans into a timeout. Upstate responded after the timeout as it went on a 6-1 run to break the set open at 22-14. Koelling scored the last three points as her final kill of the frame gave the Spartans a 25-16 triumph.
- Set Three: Mercer held an early 7-6 lead in the third set before breaking the frame open midway with a 9-4 run capped off when Macgilvary made the score 16-10 with her kill. The Bears held a six-point advantage for the next several plays before Upstate made a late rally. Trailing 23-18 late in the set, the Spartans trimmed their deficit down to 24-21 as an attack error by Noon forced Mercer into a timeout. The Bears captured the set on the first play out of the timeout.
- Set Four: Upstate recorded the opening three points of the fourth set and started the frame out on a 10-5 run finished off by a service ace from Kaleigh Kelley. Haake would give the Spartans their largest lead of the set, 14-8, with her kill. Mercer answered back with a 9-0 run to take the lead for good at 17-14. Upstate got to within two points three times after that, but the Bears would go on to win the set 25-20 on Heather Swann's kill.
