Clinton, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to the Presbyterian College Blue Hose on Wednesday afternoon from Templeton Tennis Courts in the season opening match of the spring schedule.
Upstate falls to 0-1 on the season while Presbyterian College improves to 2-1 overall.
Presbyterian College claimed two of the three doubles matches to win the point and take a 1-0 lead, as the Blue Hose won matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. The Spartans duo of Fernando Bernardes and Ignacio Garrido, playing at No. 3 doubles, posted a 6-2 win over Brandon Mills and Alejandro Bejar.
Presbyterian College would go on to win four of the six singles matches to earn the 5-2 victory. The Blue Hose were victorious at the No. 2, 3, 4 and 5 positions. Upstate picked up victories in the No. 1 and 6 matches.
The Spartans closed out singles play with a pair of wins from Felix Ewers and Francisco Neto. Neto gave Upstate its first point of the match when he defeated Joel Roberts in three sets 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 from the No. 6 position. Playing at No. 1 singles, Ewers followed with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 triumph over Diego Manzanas.
The Spartans are on the road this weekend for a pair of matches beginning on Friday, January 27 against Coastal Carolina at 3 p.m.
