Kennesaw, Ga. – Montana Swanson had a team-high eight kills on Friday evening as the USC Upstate volleyball team continued its five-match road trip with a 3-0 defeat against the Kennesaw State Owls at the KSU Convocation Center.
Upstate falls to 5-14 on the season and 2-4 in conference play while Kennesaw State improves to 11-4 overall and 5-1 in the league.
The Owls won the match by scores of 25-15, 25-23 and 25-15.
STATS OF THE MATCH
- Kennesaw State held a .272 to .141 advantage over the Spartans in hitting percentage.
 
- Upstate tied the Owls with six team blocks apiece led by two solo and one assisted from Lily Dempsey.
 
- Swanson led the Spartans with eight kills and nine digs and finished the match hitting .292.
 
- Madison Haake also just missed on a double-double after contributing 23 assists and eight digs.
 
- Kaleigh Kelley added eight digs to tie for the team-lead.
 
- Kristi Piedimonte posted a double-double for Kennesaw State on 32 assists and 10 digs.
 
- Anaiah Boyer led all players with 14 kills and Katarina Morton had a match-high 16 digs.
 
SET-BY-SET BREAKDOWN
- Set One:  The teams traded the first 18 points of the first set and were tied 9-9 early. Upstate held a 9-8 advantage after Swanson connected on a kill. The Owls used a 10-3 run midway and led 19-12 on a kill. Kennesaw State would go on to win the set 25-15 following a kill.
 
- Set Two:  The second set featured 13 ties and four lead changes. The frame started in similar fashion as the first with the score tied 8-8 after the Spartans evened things on a service error. The Owls went ahead 17-13 midway forcing Upstate into a timeout. The Spartans came out of the break and posted an 8-3 run, capped by a kill from Callie Yeargin, and took a 21-20 lead. Kennesaw State concluded the set on a 5-2 run to win 25-23.
 
- Set Three:  The Owls started the third set on a 5-2 run before Upstate trimmed its deficit to 6-4 when Gloria Ikenegbu recorded a kill. Kennesaw State would then score nine of the next 15 points to go in front 15-10. The Spartans would get as close as 15-12 midway after forcing an attack error by the Owls. Kennesaw State finished on a 10-3 run to capture the set 25-15 and win the match 3-0.
