Nashville, Tenn. – Lily Dempsey finished with a team-leading nine kills as the USC Upstate volleyball team dropped a 3-0 road decision to the Lipscomb Bisons on Saturday afternoon from Allen Arena.
Upstate falls to 5-15 overall and 2-5 in the conference while Lipscomb improves to 11-9 on the season and 4-3 in league play.
The Bisons won the match by scores of 25-18, 25-14 and 25-18.
STATS OF THE MATCH
- Lipscomb held a .388 to .196 advantage over the Spartans in hitting percentage.
- Upstate forced the Bisons into 13 attack errors and led 6.0 to 5.0 in team blocks.
- Dempsey finished the match with nine kills to lead the Spartans offensively and hit .300 overall.
- Madison Haake dished out 23 assists and Kaleigh Kelley had a team-high eight digs.
- Brianna Tellschow posted five assisted blocks to go with six kills.
- Lipscomb had four players record double-digit kills led by Lauren Anderson with 15.
- Morgan Elmore contributed 49 assists and Brittany Thomas 14 digs for the Bisons.
SET-BY-SET BREAKDOWN
- Set One: Lipscomb scored the first four points of the opening set and began on a 6-2 run. Upstate came back to cut its deficit to 7-6 with a 4-1 run capped by a combination block from Dempsey and Tellschow. Three straight kills by the Spartans, including back-to-back from Montana Swanson, kept them within a one-point margin at 13-12. The Bisons went ahead by four points late and scored the last two on kills from Maddie Phillips for the 25-18 triumph.
- Set Two: Lipscomb picked up nine of the first 12 points of the second set to lead 9-6. Upstate responded with the following three points, two coming on kills by Dempsey, and trailed 9-6. The Bisons broke the set open courtesy of an 11-6 run to go in front 20-12. Lipscomb went on to take the set 25-14 with a kill.
- Set Three: The Bisons began the third set on a 7-2 run before the Spartans trimmed the lead down to 10-7 early off a combination block from Tellschow and Emily Russell. Lipscomb then used a 12-7 run to extend its advantage out to 22-14 after a combination block. Upstate would get as close as six points late at 24-18 on a kill by Dempsey. The Bisons won the set, and match, the following play.

- The Spartans conclude their road trip, and non-conference play, on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. against Presbyterian College.
