Spartanburg, S.C. – Madison Haake recorded a double-double, and McKenna Kirkpatrick hit over.500 offensively, as the USC Upstate volleyball team fell to the Kennesaw State Owls 3-0 in ASUN play on Sunday afternoon at the G.B. Hodge Center.
Kennesaw State won the match by scores of 25-14, 26-24 and 25-20.
STATS OF THE MATCH
- The Owls held a .202 to .076 advantage over the Spartans in hitting percentage.
 
- Haake compiled her ninth double-double of the season after dishing out 25 assists to go with a team-high 12 digs.
 
- Kirkpatrick hit a match-best .583 overall after tallying eight kills and committing just one attack error on 12 attempts. It marks the second time this season that the freshman has hit .500 or better in a match after hitting .500 in a win over N.C. Central on Sept. 2.
 
- Montana Swanson tied Kirkpatrick for the team-lead with eight kills and added six digs.
 
- Haake was one of three Upstate players to contribute double-digit digs as Kaleigh Kelley had 11 and Rebecca Shearer 10.
 
- Kelley now sits 37 digs away from becoming the program's all-time Division I leader in career digs.
 
- Anaiah Boyer led all players with 16 kills for Kennesaw State.
 
- Kristi Piedimonte finished with 36 assists and nine digs while Katarina Morton had 18 digs.
 
SET-BY-SET BREAKDOWN
- Set One:  The Owls opened the first set on a 9-3 run before the Spartans cut the deficit down to 11-7 on a combination block by Haake and Gloria Ikenegbu. Kennesaw State went back ahead 20-11 following a 9-4 run. The Owls led by as many as 11 points twice and won the set 25-14 on a kill.
 
- Set Two:  The second set featured 10 ties with three coming during the first 12 points before Upstate scored three straight off two attack errors and a service ace to lead 9-6. Brianna Tellschow gave Upstate its largest lead of the set at 13-8 with her kill. Kennesaw State came back to even the score at 14-14 and began a stretch where the score would be tied five times with the last coming at 18-18 on Tellschow's kill. The Owls went back in front 21-19 and sat on set point leading 24-21. The Spartans rallied back with three straight points to extend the set when a solo block by Lily Dempsey made the score 24-24. Kennesaw State scored the final two points to win 26-24.
 
- Set Three:  Upstate scored six of the first nine points of the third set and led 6-3 on a kill from Swanson. The Owls responded with an 8-1 run to hold an 11-7 advantage. The Spartans trimmed the lead down to 12-11 after Callie Yeargin capped a 4-1 run with her kill. Kennesaw State followed with an 8-4 run to increase its lead to 20-15 until Upstate came back to within three, 22-19, on a KSU attack error. The Owls won the set four plays later at 25-20 for the 3-0 match victory.
 
UP NEXT
- The Spartans play their final two home matches of the season next weekend beginning on Friday, Nov. 3 at 6 p.m. against Stetson.
