Spartans Fall to Presbyterian College in Home Opener

Spartanburg, S.C. – A'Lexxus Davis scored a career-high 16 points but the USC Upstate women's basketball team was unable to overcome a sloppy first half in an 83-69 loss to Presbyterian College in its home opener Wednesday inside the G.B. Hodge Center.

Presbyterian College improves to 1-2 while Upstate drops to 0-2.

A LOOK AT THE NUMBERS

  • Davis went 5-for-7 from the field and tied a career-high with six free throws in eight attempts.
  • Tamera Thorpe led the Spartans with 17 points.
  • Anda Kuzmina finished with 11 points for the second consecutive game.
  • Morgan Williams just missed a double-double as she scored nine points while grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds, eight of which came on the defensive glass.
  • Camilla Kilinc scored nine points, all of which came on 3-point baskets.
  • Cortney Storey scored a game-high 27 points to lead Presbyterian College. Janie Miles added 16 points while Kacie Hall contributed 15 points. Miles hit a game-high four 3-pointers.
  • Presbyterian College went 24-for-49 (49.0 percent) from the field and made 11 of 18 3-point attempts.
  • The Spartans finished 23-for-55 (41.8 percent) from the field.
  • Upstate committed 20 turnovers in the game, 16 of which occurred in the first half.
  • Presbyterian College had 19 turnovers.
  • Upstate reserves outscored the Blue Hose bench 33-12.
  • Presbyterian College outscored Upstate 25-9 in the second quarter. The Spartans outscored the Blue Hose 22-21 in the third quarter and 25-20 in the fourth quarter.

FIRST QUARTER BREAKDOWN

  • Presbyterian College opened the game on a 9-0 run capped by a Briley Buckner layup at the 5:36 mark.
  • Upstate pulled to within three points, 11-8, thanks to a pair of Kilinc 3-pointers and a Williams layup.
  • Kilinc sank her third 3-pointer of the quarter with 50 seconds left to trim the Spartan deficit to one, 14-13, before Storey sank a 3-pointer to give the visitors a 17-13 lead at the end of the opening quarter.

SECOND QUARTER BREAKDOWN

  • After the Blue Hose scored five consecutive points, a Davis layup brought Upstate back within seven points, 22-15, with 7:51 left.
  • Storey completed the three-point play to give the Blue Hose a 28-15 lead with 6:05 to play in the frame.
  • Miles sank 3-pointers on consecutive Blue Hose possessions to give the visitors a 40-19 advantage at the 1:49 mark.
  • Presbyterian College led 42-22 at halftime.

THIRD QUARTER BREAKDOWN

  • The Blue Hose tied their largest lead of the game at 23 points after a Miles 3-pointer gave them a 49-26 edge at the 8:34 mark.
  • After the first of two  Ericka Blackwell-Boyden free throws gave the visitors a 52-32 lead with 6:43 left, Upstate went on a 10-0 run capped by a pair of Tamera Thorpe free throws with 4:17 remaining to make the score 52-42.
  • Presbyterian College answered with an 11-2 run to close the frame with a 63-44 lead.

FOURTH QUARTER BREAKDOWN

  • Riley Hemm's 3-pointer gave Presbyterian College a 66-48 edge at the 8:15 mark.
  • Kacie Hall and Diamon Shiflet traded 3-pointers to bring the Spartans within 12, 76-63, with 2:49 to go.
  • The Blue Hose answered the Upstate challenge with two free throws by Blackwell-Boyden and a Storey layup to lead 79-63 with 1:51 remaining.
  • Thorpe brought the Spartans to within 10, 79-69, with 48 seconds to go after layups on three straight Upstate possessions. A Storey free throw and a Buckner 3-pointer served as the final points of the game.

UP NEXT

  • The Spartans travel to Virginia Tech on Friday for a 9 p.m. contest before closing out the weekend at Campbell on Sunday at 2 p.m.
