Parkhurst Leads Spartans in Victory over Converse

Spartanburg, S.C. – Rylie Parkhurst scored a career-high 15 points as the USC Upstate women's basketball team defeated Converse 71-51 on Tuesday evening in the G.B. Hodge Center.

Upstate improves to 1-4 while Converse is 4-2.

A LOOK AT THE NUMBERS

  • Parkhurst's 15 points is one better than her previous career high, which came in the season-opener at East Carolina. 
  • Brittney Delva (14 points), Tamera Thorpe (13 points) and Anda Kuzmina (11 points) each finished in double figures.
  • Morgan Williams and A'Lexxus Davis each grabbed 10 rebounds.
  • Delva dished out a career-high 10 assists. She is the fourth player during the Division I era to have 10 or more assists in a single game and first since Tyra Smith had 12 assists against Stetson on Feb. 29, 2012.
  • Brianna James led Converse with 11 points, followed by Ashley Sides with nine points.
  • Nigeria Davis grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Valkyries.
  • Upstate outrebounded Converse 46-31.
  • The Spartans finished 25-for-60 (41.7 percent) from the field while the Valkyries went 19-for-54 (35.2 percent) from the field.

FIRST QUARTER BREAKDOWN

  • Converse opened the game on a 5-0 run before the Spartans tied the game at 5 as Delva completed the three-point play.
  • Tatum Boggs gave the visitors an 8-5 lead on a 3-pointer at the 5:49 mark.
  • Parkhurst put the Spartans on top 9-8 thanks to a 3-pointer at the 4:55 mark.
  • After Parkhurst gave the Spartans a 14-10 lead with 2:21 remaining, the Valkyries went on a 5-0 run as they claimed a 15-14 lead on a Paige Johnson 3-pointer with 63 seconds remaining.
  • Williams hit a free throw to even the contest at 15 after the opening stanza.

SECOND QUARTER BREAKDOWN

  • Upstate opened the second quarter on a 10-0 run, capped by a Delva layup at the 7:26 mark for a 25-15 lead.
  • Converse trimmed the Upstate lead to four points, 25-21, following a Jordan Brooks basket with just over five minutes left.
  • Delva's layup with eight seconds remaining in the quarter sent Upstate into halftime with a 33-25 lead.

THIRD QUARTER BREAKDOWN

  • A pair of 3-pointers by Dominique Hill and James trimmed the Upstate lead to 37-31 with 7:27 to play.
  • The Spartans went on a 14-3 run for a 51-34 lead with 1:48 left following a Parkhurst 3-pointer.
  • Upstate led 51-37 at the end of the frame.

FOURTH QUARTER BREAKDOWN

  • Kuzmina's jumper with 8:44 remaining gave Upstate a 56-37 advantage.
  • Converse answered with a 12-2 run as the Valkyries pulled to within nine, 58-49, following a Shakori Jennings-Shuster layup with 5:29 to play.
  • Following a James jumper with 4:52 remaining to make the score 61-51, Upstate closed the game on a 10-0 run as Bailey Wensler's 3-pointer with 35 seconds left served as the final basket of the game.
