Greenville, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team concluded its fall season on Friday and Saturday with winning records in singles and doubles play at the Furman Duals. Upstate went 9-8 in singles matches and 6-3 in doubles play.
"The first day of the tournament we did a great job competing in singles and were able to get to and win a bunch of third sets," assistant coach Tim McLane said. "We were able to come back to day and compete really well in doubles while executing our game plans. Overall, I was rather pleased with how we competed as a team all weekend."
Of Upstate's six doubles victories, three were earned by the pairing of Taylor Dodd and Elin Hellberg. Each of the duo's doubles wins came against Kennesaw State pairs. Dodd and Hellberg knocked off Jada Tiljani and Brenna Reilly 6-2 before wins over Aspen Jarrett/Kennedy Craig and Laura Hopton/Elle Baker by 7-6 (5) scores.
In singles play, Carol Sigaki claimed both of her matches with a 7-6 (5), 6-1 win over Brenna Reilly and a come-from-behind 5-7, 6-1, 10-6 triumph over Gabby Rodriguez. Gabriela Cevallos and Vale Zarama each won two of three singles matches.
"This was a really positive way to wrap up our fall season and gives us some good momentum heading into the short offseason," McLane said. "If we can sustain this level of effort and intensity when we come back in the spring we're going to have a lot of success during the season."
Upstate opens the spring season hosting crosstown rival Wofford on January 20 at 1 p.m.
