DeLand, Fla. – The Stetson Hatters captured four singles matches to come back for a 4-3 victory over the USC Upstate men's tennis team in ASUN play on Saturday afternoon at the Stoll Tennis Center.
Upstate falls to 5-15 on the season and 1-4 in conference play, while Stetson improves to 14-4 overall and 4-1 in the league.
"Going into today, as a team, we talked about playing with a sense of urgency and making sure we left everything on the court, and they certainly did that during this match," said assistant coach Tim McLane. "We've been in so many of the tight battles all year long and we keep putting ourselves in winning positions and unfortunately today just didn't go our way. We're really proud of the way everyone competed today."
The Spartans began the match on a positive note by winning the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3 to lead the Hatters 1-0. Ankush Arora and Francisco Neto got things started for Upstate by winning their No. 3 match over Coilin MacNamara and Graham Ball 6-3. Following a Stetson victory at No. 2 doubles, the No. 1 combination of Ignacio Garrido and Fernando Bernardes responded for the Spartans by defeating Loic Blanco and Colter Decoste 7-6(7) to capture the doubles point.
The Hatters secured singles wins at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 to earn the 4-3 victory. Upstate picked up victories in the No. 4 and No. 6 matches.
Neto gave the Spartans a 2-0 advantage in the No. 6 singles match as he topped Decoste in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. In the No. 4 singles match, Bernardes broke a 2-2 tie in the contest after winning in straight sets over William Shkrob 7-5, 6-4.
Lenhard Haupt sent his No. 2 singles match against Ball into the third set. Ball took the first set 7-6 before Haupt responded in the second by a score 7-5. Ball won the first three points of the third set en route to the 6-4 win.
Upstate closes out its regular season at home on Saturday, April 15 at 2 p.m. versus NJIT.
