Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate freshman Elin Hellberg won the Black Singles Consolation bracket championship on Sunday as the USC Upstate women's tennis team wrapped up the USC Upstate Invitational at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
Hellberg defeated Charlotte van Diemen of Georgia Southern 6-4, 6-2 in Sunday's final. The Malmo, Sweden native earned five total victories on the weekend.
"I didn't start the weekend very well, I was a bit nervous at the beginning," Hellberg said. "Yesterday I was able to relax a bit and do what it took to win the matches. Today felt much better, I had good length on the ball and I was patient. It feels good to have some wins to build self-confidence and it will help me improve my game moving forward."
The doubles pairing of Noelia Acuna and Gabriela Cevallos lost 6-4 in the Doubles Consolation bracket championship to Hannah Lehfeldt and Caroline Nielsen of Queens.
For the weekend, eight Upstate players combined to win 11 matches.
"We have improved overall from last fall to this fall," junior Vale Zarama said. "The team has very good energy this year and we keep each other accountable. You can feel the support that we all give to each other and there's a lot of energy on the court during practices and matches. It's a very good beginning and this weekend was a huge boost of confidence for our team."
Upstate continues its fall season next weekend at the Mountain Invitational in Asheville, N.C.
