Upstate Drops Home Opener to Jacksonville in Five Sets

Spartanburg, S.C. – Madison Haake recorded her third triple-double of the season and Lily Dempsey tied her career-high of 20 kills as the USC Upstate volleyball team opened its home schedule on Friday evening with a 3-2 loss to the Jacksonville Dolphins inside the G.B. Hodge Center.

Upstate falls to 4-11 on the season and 1-1 in ASUN play while Jacksonville improves to 7-7 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

The Dolphins won the match by scores of 25-16, 25-19, 21-25, 16-25 and 17-15.

STATS OF THE MATCH

  • Dempsey and Haake were two of three Spartans that finished the match with double-digit kills along with Callie Yeargin.
  • Dempsey compiled her first career double-double after posting 20 kills for the second time this season and 13 digs. The freshman also hit .265 for the match.
  • Haake's third triple-double this year, and 11th of her career, consisted of 11 kills, 31 assists and 20 digs. The 20 digs fell one shy of tying her career-high.
  • Yeargin picked up her third double-double of the season with 15 kills and 11 digs while Montana Swanson fell just shy of a double-double on nine kills and 13 digs.
  • Rebecca Shearer contributed 20 assists and seven digs, and Kaleigh Kelley collected 18 digs.
  • Jacksonville had three players finish with double-doubles in Alleah Stamatis, Mallory Mattingly and Natalie Wehner.
  • Stamatis dished out 50 assists while Mattingly added 16 kills and Wehner 21 digs.
  • The Dolphins held a .172 to .161 advantage over Upstate in hitting percentage.
  • The Spartans led 65-58 in kills, 56-52 in assists and 94-87 in digs.

SET-BY-SET BREAKDOWN

  • Set One:  Jacksonville opened the match on a 7-1 run before Upstate cut the lead down to 12-9 midway on an attack error. The Spartans had trimmed their deficit to three points twice before that on kills by Dempsey and Haake. The Dolphins would then go a 10-3 run for a 22-12 advantage and captured the set 25-16 on a kill.
  • Set Two:  The teams traded the first 22 points of the second set and were tied 11-11 early. Upstate led by as many as two points, 7-5, during the opening stages when Haake connected on a kill. The score remained tied a few plays later when a kill from Yeargin made the score 14-14. Jacksonville used a 6-0 run to lead 20-14 before the Spartans answered back with four straight points and trailed 20-18 on a kill by Dempsey. The Dolphins finished the set on a 5-1 run to win 25-19.
  • Set Three:  The third set began in similar fashion as the second with the score even at 13-13 during the midway point of the frame. Upstate benefitted from an 8-4 run and led 21-17 after Dempsey's kill. Jacksonville cut the lead to three points twice after that with the last coming at 24-21. Haake captured the set for the Spartans the following play with her kill.
  • Set Four:  Upstate jumped out to an early five-point lead in the fourth set with a 6-1 run capped by a kill from Swanson. The Dolphins came back with a 7-4 run and trailed 10-8. The Spartans broke the set open with a 12-6 run and went in front 22-14 off a Jacksonville attack error. Upstate scored the final two points of the set and won 25-16 on Dempsey's service ace.
  • Set Five:  The fifth set went back-and-forth and featured 10 ties and seven lead changes. The first 18 points saw the scored tied eight times with the last coming at 9-9 after Dempsey recorded a kill. The Spartans led by two points late at 14-12 on a kill from Haake. The Dolphins concluded the set on a 5-1 run and won the match after taking the frame 17-15.
