Spartanburg, S.C. – For the first time since the 2005-06 season, the USC Upstate women's basketball team reached the century mark in scoring as five players finished in double-figures during a 109-39 victory over the Brevard College Tornados in its non-conference finale Tuesday evening at the G.B. Hodge Center.
Upstate improves to 5-10 on the season while Brevard is 4-5 overall.
A LOOK AT THE NUMBERS
- The Spartans scored over 100 points in a game for the first time since Dec. 29, 2005 when they defeated Converse 103-55.
- Anda Kuzmina led Upstate offensively with a career-high 20 points after shooting a career-best 8-for-11 from the field while tying her career mark of five assists.
- A'Lexxus Davis just missed on a double-double after contributing 17 points and nine rebounds. Davis set a new career-high with seven made free throws and tied her career-best of four steals.
- Tamera Thorpe registered 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting.
- Riley Popplewell added 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting while DeNisha Swain posted 10 points and a season-high six assists.
- Brittney Delva scored all eight of her points at the free throw line after going a career-best 8-for-8 at the charity stripe to go with five assists.
- Annalee Bollinger and Destiny Williams each scored a team-high 10 points for the Tornados.
- The Spartans dished out a season-high 23 assists and went a season-best 69.1 percent (38-of-55) shooting from the field.
- Upstate held a 54-14 advantage in points in the paint, 26-9 in points off turnovers, 14-2 in fast break points and 46-13 in bench points.
- The 39 points are the lowest allowed by the Spartans since defeating Converse 93-35 in the season opener last year.
FIRST QUARTER BREAKDOWN
- Upstate opened the game on an 8-3 run and led by five with 7:16 left on a jumper by Morgan Williams.
- Brevard came back to within one point, 8-7, after back-to-back layups from Williams.
- The Spartans followed with seven consecutive points and led 15-7 at the 2:20 mark following a pair of free throws by Delva.
- Upstate led by eight points two more times over the next two minutes before Camilla Kilinc knocked down a 3-pointer with four seconds remaining for a 22-13 advantage.
SECOND QUARTER BREAKDOWN
- The Spartans led by double-digits for the entire second quarter beginning at 23-13 with 9:46 left on a free throw by Davis.
- After the Tornados cut the lead down to 11 points, Upstate would hold Brevard scoreless for nearly six minutes as it broke the game open with a 16-0 run.
- Popplewell capped the 16-0 run at the 3:34 mark with her layup giving the Spartans a 40-18 lead.
- Upstate led by as many as 23 points in the quarter three times over the final 2:35 with the last coming just before halftime.
- Kuzmina's jumper with five seconds remaining sent the Spartans into intermission leading 52-29.
THIRD QUARTER BREAKDOWN
- Upstate limited Brevard to just two points over the first 7:48 of the third quarter.
- The Spartans outscored the Tornados 21-2 during that run and went in front 73-31 with 2:56 left on a 3-pointer from Swain.
- After Bailey Ray connected on a 3-pointer, Upstate scored four of the last six points to lead 77-35 after three quarters.
FOURTH QUARTER BREAKDOWN
- The Spartans held Brevard to four points in the fourth quarter and outscored it 32-4 overall.
- Upstate opened the quarter on a 17-2 run over a span of 3:09 and took a 94-37 lead with 6:40 remaining on a 3-pointer by Kilinc.
- Williams scored all four points for the Tornados in the final quarter with her last field goal coming with 5:41 left in the contest.
- The Spartans recorded the game's final 15 points to secure the 109-39 victory.
