Asheville, N.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team played its second straight match on the road to open the season on Saturday and dropped a narrow 4-3 decision to UNC Asheville at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown.
UNC Asheville improves to 2-0 while USC Upstate falls to 0-2.
The Bulldogs claimed the doubles point thanks to a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles and a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles.
UNC Asheville took a 3-0 lead in the match with wins at No. 4 and No.1 singles. Carol Sigaki earned a 7-6, 6-0 victory over Hannah Francisco at No. 2 singles followed by Vale Zarama's second singles win of the season, a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 triumph over Lauren Watson-Steele at No. 3 singles.
UNC Asheville clinched the match with a win at No. 6 singles before Gabriela Cevallos claimed the second singles win over her collegiate career with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Emily Sidor at No. 5 singles.
