Spartanburg, S.C. – Erin Hill threw her second complete game of the season as the USC Upstate softball team opened ASUN play on Saturday afternoon splitting a doubleheader with the Kennesaw State Owls by scores of 2-1 and 1-0 from Cyrill Stadium.
USC Upstate's record is now 19-6 overall and 1-1 in the conference while Kennesaw State is 16-9 on the season and 1-1 in league play.
The Owls won game one of the doubleheader 2-1 before the Spartans came back in game two with a 1-0 victory.
GAME ONE – KENNESAW STATE 2, USC UPSTATE 1
Scoring Breakdown
- Top 2nd – Kennesaw State took a 1-0 lead after plating one run in its half of the second. The Owls loaded the bases after a leadoff walk to Patricia Awald, and two straight singles by Alexa Solorzano and Jessie Mullen. Andrea Summey drove in Awald with her RBI sacrifice fly to center field.
- Top 4th – Awald gave Kennesaw State a 2-0 lead after her leadoff home run to right center field.
- Bottom 6th – USC Upstate cut its deficit down to 2-1 on an RBI single by Kristen Wright. The Spartans loaded the bases following singles from Ansley Gilstrap, Karla Beasley and Logan Morris. Wright took a 1-2 offering up the middle allowing Gilstrap to score from third.
Notables
- Alley Cutting (6-4) earned the win throwing a complete game and allowed one run on seven hits, no walks and four strikeouts.
- Christina Biggerstaff (8-3) suffered the loss giving up two runs on four hits, one walk and seven strikeouts in a complete game effort.
- Beasley led USC Upstate offensively with two hits in three plate appearances.
- Wright went 1-for-3 with one RBI.
- Gilstrap added one hit and scored one run.
- Morris, Kayla Hussey and Kendsey Chappelear all collected one hit apiece.
- Awald finished the game 1-for-2 with two runs and one RBI to lead the Owls.
- Summey also contributed one RBI.
- The Spartans outhit Kennesaw State 7-4.
GAME TWO – KENNESAW STATE 0, USC UPSTATE 1
Scoring Breakdown
- Bottom 4th – USC Upstate scored the game's only run on a wild pitch with no outs to go ahead 1-0. The Spartans put the first three runners on base when Morris walked, Megan Obier reached on a throwing error and Brittany Case walked. McKenna Helton, pinch-running for Morris, scored from third on a wild pitch by Owls pitcher Abigail Green.
Notables
- Hill (6-1) recorded her second complete game this season and picked up her first career win against an ASUN opponent. She went the distance in the finale and did not allow a run on two hits, three walks and four strikeouts.
- Green (5-4) took the loss pitching six innings and surrendered one run on two hits, four walks and six strikeouts.
- Gilstrap had both hits for USC Upstate in three plate appearances.
- Helton scored one run off the wild pitch.
- Awald and Maddie Roth combined for both Kennesaw State hits.
