Lancers Await as Spartans Travel to Farmville

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's soccer team will take one of their longest trips of the season tomorrow morning as they head for Farmville, Va., to take on the Longwood Lancers on Saturday afternoon.

USC Upstate (2-7-3, 0-5-1 BSC) and Longwood (4-6-1, 2-2-1 BSC) are meeting for just the third time in program history on Saturday afternoon. Last season the Lancers defeated USC Upstate in the regular season matchup 3-0 at County University Soccer Stadium but it was the Spartans who had the last laugh. In the first round of the Big South Tournament the Spartans marched into Farmville and came away with a 1-0 victory over the Lancers.

Abbie Ellis (Clemmons, N.C.) scored her 15th goal of the season against the Lancers in the 30th minute of the contest. The Spartans back line held strong as they withstood the barrage of shots from the Longwood offense and USC Upstate advanced to the semi-finals of the Big South Championships.

The Spartans are currently trying to breakout of a five game losing streak dating back to the Hampton contest on September 21st. USC Upstate has not won a game since a 2-1 win over in-town rival Wofford on September 18th. If the Spartans are able to walk away with a victory tomorrow night it will be their first road win of the season, with their current road record holding at 0-2-2 on the season.

In their last contest USC Upstate was stunned by Radford in the final 15 minutes of the contest. USC Upstate held a 2-1 lead going into the 75th minute of play, then the Highlanders scored four unanswered goals to steal a game away from the Spartans at County University Soccer Stadium. The Spartans were outshot 29-9 on the afternoon and outshot 15-4 with shots on frame.

Ellis currently leads the team in goals (4), points (10) and game winning goals (2) on the season. Montanna Hill (Mount Airy, Md.) is currently tied with Emma Honis (Ocoee, Fla.) for second on the team with three goals. Hill is second on the team in points (9) but leads the team in assists with three on the season.

Longwood is currently coming off a 1-0 road loss to Winthrop on Saturday afternoon. The Lancers were outshot 7-3 in the match and only recorded one shot on goal the entire game. Kennedy Culbreath and Emilie Kupsov leads the team with four goals each on the season.

The match will kickoff at 3:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon and live links to video and stats can be found on www.upstatespartans.com .
