Spartanburg, S.C.— The USC Upstate Women's basketball team will face off against Mars Hill Saturday night at 6 p.m. inside the G.B. Hodge Center.
USC Upstate (2-1) is coming off their second win of the season with a 70-62 win over Western Carolina. The Spartans offensive dominance was led by
Brianna Lewis (Chicago, IL), who scored 20 points for the Spartans, her eighth time putting up 20 points in her career. Junior forward
Michaela Gibbons (Troutman, NC) was on fire from behind the arc making five 3-pointers and finishing with 16 total points.
The Spartans continue to receive great production from new faces on the roster with freshman point guard
Jada Logan (Rutherfordton, NC) putting up an impressive stat line of 10 points, 8 assist and 6 rebounds.
Kathryn Kirkwood (Milwaukee, Wisc.) continues to be a productive presence coming off the bench with 9 points and 8 rebounds in just 15 minutes action.
Adding size to the roster has proven to be beneficial to the Spartans as they continue to dominate rebounds with four of their players averaging six or more rebounds per game. The Spartans have also outrebounded their opponents in every game this season and have blocked 12 shots on the season, which ranks first in the Big South Conference.
USC Upstate and Mars Hill (0-3) will be facing off for the second time in program history. The Spartans lead the all-time series 1-0 with their first game resulting in an 81-65 win for the Spartans back in 2015.
The Lions are coming off a three-game losing streak with their most recent game resulting in an 82-70 loss against Lees-McRae. The key players for the Lions include Junior guard De'Ja Marshall, who has averaged a double-double this season with an average of 18.7 points and 10.3 rebounds per game followed by Tatum Boggs, who has averaged 9.7 points per game.
