SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Freshman forward Kathryn Kirkwood had a career night posting her first career double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds, but USC Upstate came short losing to Presbyterian College 66-58 on Tuesday night at the G.B. Hodge Center.

With the loss the Spartans fall to 6-18 overall on the season and 2-11 in Big South play. Presbyterian snapped a nine game losing streak with the win and improves their record to 5-20 overall and 3-11 in conference play.

A LOOK AT THE NUMBERS:

• Kathryn Kirkwood set new career highs in points (17), rebounds (14), steals (4), field goals made (7), field goals attempted (14) and minutes played (20).
• Riley Popplewell was the second leading scorer with 13 points and 6 rebounds.
• DeNisha Swain finished with a team high 9 assists and was second on the team in steals with 3.
• Salina Virola picked up her second double-double against USC Upstate this season with a 15 point, 13 rebound effort against the Spartans.
• Shamani Stafford and Trinity Johnson each contributed 15 points to the contest. Kacie Hall added 11 points in the game as well.
• With the victory Presbyterian has tied up the All-Time series at 21-21.
• USC Upstate finished the game with 17 assists and 11 steals in the game. The Spartans also won the battle in the paint 24-22 and had 17 second chance points. The USC Upstate bench outscored the Blue Hose 31-8.
• The Spartans shot 35 percent from the field, 25 percent from three-point range and 75 percent from the free throw line.
• Presbyterian shot 39 percent from the field, 57 percent from beyond the arch and 83 percent from the free throw line.  

FIRST QUARTER BREAKDOWN:

• Brianna Lewis scored the opening points of the game with a jumper at the 9:40 mark of the opening frame.
• Presbyterian then went on an 11-0 run over the next three minutes of game action.
• Riley Popplewell ended the Blue Hose run and jump started the Spartan offense. USC Upstate reeled off five consecutive points to pull the game to within two points of Presbyterian.
• The Blue Hose responded with a quick 5-0 spurt to push the advantage back to double figures.
• The Spartans went into the second quarter trailing 21-12.

SECOND QUARTER BREAKDOWN:

• DeNisha Swain knocked down a jumper with 9:10 to go in the half to make the score 21-14.
• Presbyterian once again went on a 10-3 run over three minutes of game time.
• Kathryn Kirkwood then caught fire and scored five of the Spartans last seven points in the second quarter.
• The Spartans went into halftime trailing 39-26.  

THIRD QUARTER BREAKDOWN:

• For the first three and half minutes of action neither teams were able to make a shot.
• Swain finally ended the scoring drought with 7:18 to go in the third frame with a three-pointer.
• The Spartans trailed 41-29 with 6:49 to play in the quarter, over the next four minutes of game action USC Upstate dwindled Presbyterian's lead down to five points.
• Lewis nailed a jumper as time expired in the third period. Presbyterian held onto a slim 48-42 advantage entering into the final quarter of play.
• USC Upstate shot 41 percent from the field in the third quarter and held the Blue Hose to just 12 percent shooting in the frame.

FOURTH QUARTER BREAKDOWN:

• Salina Virola began the fourth quarter with an easy layup in the paint.
• Kirkwood made back-to-back baskets with 7:37 to go in the contest to pull the Spartans within six points of the Blue Hose.
• The two teams went back-and-forth trading baskets for several minutes. Then Rylie Parkhurst nailed a three-pointer to pull the Spartans to within four points.
• Presbyterian finished the game on a 5-1 run and took the game 66-58.
• Kirkwood accounted for eight of the Spartans 16 points in the fourth quarter. USC Upstate shot 30 percent down the final stretch.

NEXT UP:

• The Spartans will travel to UNC Asheville on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
