Herring, Logan notch career highs as Spartans suffer first home loss this season

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Two Spartans rebounded in double-figures, including Jada Logan's career-high of 11 boards, and Barrett Herring notched a career-high 17 points as the USC Upstate Spartans suffered their first defeat inside the G.B. Hodge Center this season in a 68-48 loss to Big South Conference opponent UNC Asheville.
 
UNC Asheville (9-4, 3-1 BSC) won the tip and opened the scoring in the contest in the first minute of play on a jumper from Nadiria Evans, but USC Upstate (6-7, 1-3 BSC) stormed back with the next six straight points to put the Spartans up 6-2. The Bulldogs would retake the lead at 7-6, but Barrett Herring's and-one with 6:14 remaining in the opening period sent the Spartans into the first media timeout with a 9-7 advantage. USC Upstate used a pair of 3-pointers to push their lead to 15-9 before closing the first quarter with a 15-13 lead.
 
The Spartans went cold on the floor for 3:44 in the second quarter as the Bulldogs opened a 12-0 run to take a 10-point lead at 32-22 with two and a half minutes remaining in the first half. USC Upstate got six points back on a pair of buckets from Quadijah Moore and a layup by Riley Popplewell to cut their deficit to 32-28, forcing a UNC Asheville timeout in the final minute of the period. The Spartans entered halftime down 37-30.
 
Herring led USC Upstate in scoring in the first half with nine points while Popplewell led on the glass with nine rebounds.
 
The Spartans notched a pair of treys in the third quarter before entering the final period where Herring scored eight of USC Upstate's 10 points in the quarter.
 
Notes

Upstate – Barrett Herring bested her previous career-high of 13 points with 17 points in tonight's contest to lead the USC Upstate offense. Riley Popplewell led the Spartans rebounding efforts with 13 boards beside Jada Logan's career-high 11 rebounds. Michaela Gibbons contributed a team-high four assists.

UNC Asheville – Nadiria Evans and Sonora Dengoki both scored in double-figures with 14 and 12, respectively. Brooke Jordan-Brown also hit double-digits, but in rebounds with 11.

The Spartans next home game will be against Winthrop on Thursday, January 9, 2020. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. inside the G.B. Hodge Center.
