CONWAY, S.C. – The USC Upstate softball team went 1-1 on Saturday afternoon against Monmouth and Maryland Eastern Shore at the Courtyard Marriott Barefoot Landing Invitational.
In the Spartans first game of the afternoon the team ended up in a pitchers dual with Monmouth. The game was scoreless through the opening five frames of action but the Hawks broke through in the top of the sixth inning with a pair of runs to steal a win from USC Upstate.
In the second game of the day the Spartans took out their frustration against a familiar opponent this season. In their second matchup of the season USC Upstate pounded out 21-runs against Maryland Eastern Shore. The 21-run outburst tied the school record for runs in a game and were the most by a USC Upstate softball team since the 2015 season. The Spartans scored in every inning and scored five or more runs in three consecutive innings.
Game One: Monmouth 2, USC Upstate 0
Scoring Breakdown
Top 6th: Sam Tomasetti reached on a Spartan error to start the inning. Lindsey Baron drove in Tomasetti with an RBI triple to left field. In the next at-bat Kayla Rosado hit an RBI single to third base and gave the Hawks a 2-0 advantage.
Notables
Savannah Grigsby and
Alyssa Oakes were the only Spartans to record hits in the opening contest.
Erin Hill threw a complete game and allowed just one earned run and three strikeouts on the day.
Game Two: USC Upstate 21, Maryland Eastern Shore 0
Scoring Breakdown
Top 1st: With one out in the top of first inning,
Max Barnes ripped a double to right center field on a 1-0 count to put a Spartan runner in scoring position. Barnes then stole third and scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the inning.
Peyton Darnell drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch, after a
Sarah Price walk,
Savannah Grigsby doubled down the left field line to score Darnell.
Top 2nd: With one out in the inning the Spartans had the bases loaded when
Alyssa Oakes drew a four pitch RBI walk.
Peyton Darnell then hit a sacrifice fly to left field and
Sarah Price followed Darnell's at-bat with an RBI double to right field.
Savannah Grigsby then came through with two-run double to left center field to end the scoring for the Spartans in the second.
Top 3rd: The first two Spartans reached base on back-to-back singles,
Tiffany Domingue singled to left field to score the first run of the inning.
Bella Bertot laced a two-run double to left field with one away in the inning and Payton Darnell ripped an RBI double to centerfield to score the 11
th run of the night for USC Upstate. A
Sarah Price RBI single to left field ended the scoring for USC Upstate in the third.
Top 4th: Max Brown hit a one out single to right center field and advanced to second on a single from
Tiffany Domingue. With two-outs in the inning
Bella Bertot crushed a three-run bomb to right field, a few batters later
Truett Taylor crushed a three-run home run to left center field to end the scoring for the Spartans in the fourth inning.
Top 5th: A
Sarah Price two-run triple and an RBI single by
Savannah Grigsby rounded out the scoring for USC Upstate.
Notables
Sarah Price went 4-for-4 at the plate with a trio of runs and four RBI's.
Savannah Grigsby went 3-for-4 with four RBI's and
Bella Bertot went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs and a team high 5 RBI's.
Truett Taylor went 1-for-1 with a trio of RBI's.
Mallie Brown threw a complete game shutout with nine strikeouts in the contest. The junior allowed just one hit in the outing.

USC Upstate will host Clemson tomorrow afternoon at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex. First serve is set for 3:00 p.m.
