Series History
The Spartans and Eagles split their regular-season series. Upstate took the most recent meeting this past Saturday 66-59 in Rock Hill after dropping the first meeting 52-38 on Jan. 9 in Spartanburg.
Riley Popplewell joined the 1,000 point club on Saturday as she posted a double-double with 20 points and 17 rebounds to help the Spartans defeat Winthrop 66-59 on the road to close the regular season. Brianna Lewis also dropped a season-high 26 points in the win. Lewis' 26 points led all scorers in the game, and she also had three assists. Entering the game, Popplewell was three points away from 1,000 and she surpassed that mark in the second quarter. Her 20-point, 17-rebound effort was her 15th career double-double. Kuzmina had a career-high four steals, and Jada Logan pulled down seven rebounds.
The Eagles were led by Kem Nwabudu's double-double effort with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Anika Riley and Maleeah Langstaff each put up 10 points in the loss.
Ones to watch
UPSTATE – Brianna Lewis, Upstate's leading scorer, has posted double-figures in 11 straight games. She's dropped 20+ in seven of those and averages 15.9 points per game. Riley Popplewell is the team's second leading scorer and the leading rebounder. She has scored in double-figures in her last nine of 10 games, and five of those have been double-double efforts. She is averaging 9.0 points per game and 8.3 rebounds per game.
Winthrop – Jah'Che Whitfield leads the Eagles in scoring with 10.9 points per game. She is the second leading rebounder behind Anika Riley who leads the team on the glass with 6.8 boards per game.
