Spartans Win Rain Shortened Game against North Carolina Central

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In a rain shortened game on Sunday morning, the USC Upstate softball team defeated North Carolina 3-0 at Cyrill Stadium.
 
Pitching, once again dominated the day for USC Upstate as senior Mallie Brown (Stockbridge, Ga.) threw 5.0 complete innings of shutout softball against the Eagles. The Peach State native also struck out 11 of the 19 batters she faced on Sunday. Freshman Adison Yoder (Newton, N.C.) came on in relief to pick up her first career save in 1.0 inning of work.
 
Offensively four Spartans ended the day with multi-hit performances at the plate. Peyton Darnell (Fort Mill, S.C.) led the charge with a 2-for-3 day at the plate with an RBI double and a two-run bomb to straight away center field. Sarah Price (Landrum, S.C.), Savannah Grigsby (Elgin, S.C.) and Celeste Delorenzo (Ormond Beach, Fla.) all finished with two-hits in the game for USC Upstate.

Scoring Breakdown
 
Bottom 3rd: Price and Delorenzo hit back-to-back one out singles to put pressure on the Eagles defense. Tiffany Domingue (York, S.C.) reached on a fielder's choice, setting the stage for an RBI double for Darnell.
 
Bottom 5th: Delorenzo smoked a ball back up the middle of the infield for her second hit of the ball game. With two outs in the inning, Darnell once again stepped to the plate and hit a two-run moon shot homerun over the centerfield fence.
 
Notables
Mallie Brown picked up her second win of the season and struck out 11 batters in five innings of work.
 
Peyton Darnell finished with a 2-for-3 day at the plate with two extra base hits and three-RBI's. Delorenzo, Price and Grigsby also finished with multi-hit performances in the win.
 
UP next for the Spartans
The Spartans will have over a week off before they return to Cyrill Stadium for the Wings ETC… Classic on February 27-28th.
