Spartans Offense Blasts Past Panthers

Jacksonville, Fla.  – The USC Upstate softball team came away with a 10-4 victory over Georgia State in the Jacksonville/UNF Spring Break Challenge on Saturday morning at Pruitt Softball Stadium.
 
The win moves the Spartans to 8-2 overall on the season and 2-1 in tournament play. The Spartans offense was led offensively by sophomore centerfielder Savannah Grigsby (Elgin, S.C.) who went 2-for-4 at the plate with 4-RBI's and a run. Freshman Madison Hill (Eagle Rock, Va.) got in on the action as well, finishing second on the team with a pair of RBI's.
 
Adison Yoder (Newton, N.C.) made her first career start on Saturday morning and threw 4.0 complete innings and picked up her second win of the season. The freshman gave up a trio of runs, but struck out a trio of batters in the contest. Mallie Brown (Stockbridge, Ga.) threw the final three innings of the game to earn her first save the season.

Scoring Breakdown
 
Top 3rd: With one out in the inning, Olivia Marshall (Mooresville, N.C.) reached on a throwing error by the first baseman and advanced to second on a Bre Cooper (Massillon, Ohio) single to left field. Following a Sarah Price (Landrum, S.C.) line out to second base, Celeste Delorenzo (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Madison Lanoux (Fleming Island, Fla.) recorded back-to-back RBI knocks to break the scoreless tie. Marisa Soterakis (Miramar, Fla.) got plunked by a pitch to load up the bases. Grigsby came through with a two-run single to center field. A few batters later Hill concluded the scoring for the Spartans with a two-run single to left field.  
 
Top 4th: Price singled to left field with one out in the inning, advanced to second on a stolen base and made it all the way to third on a wild pitch by the Panthers. With two outs in the inning, Soterakis walked to load the bases once again for the Spartan offense. Another two run shot to center field by Grigsby and the Spartans held an 8-0 advantage.  
 
Bottom 4th: Daisy Hess singled to left field with one away in the inning to put a runner on for the Panthers. Bailee Richardson reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Following a Sophie Mooney walk, Skylar Mosel hit a three-run home run over the center field fence to keep the Panthers in the game.
 
Top 5th: Hill began the inning with a walk and moved to second on an Alexa Sanchez (Miami, Fla.) sacrifice bunt. With two outs in the inning, Hill stole third and Price walked to put a pair of runners on the corners for the Spartans. Price attempted to steal second, but in the run down Hill was able to score before Price was tagged out.
 
Bottom 5th: With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Hess homered over the right center field fence to keep the Panthers within striking distance of the Spartans.
 
Top 7th: With one out in the inning Peyton Darnell (Fort Mill, S.C.) launched a home run over the left field fence and gave the Spartans an even 10 runs on the morning.

 
Notables
Grigsby finished the day 2-for-4, with 4-RBI's and a run scored.
Madison Hill went 1-for-3 at the plate with 2-RBI's and a run scored.
Delorenzo, Lanoux and Darnell all ended the day with RBI's for the Spartans.
Adison Yoder went 4.0 innings of action and picked up her second win of the season.
Mallie Brown pitched the final 3.0 innings to pick up her first save of the season.
