Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate softball continued Spartan Classic weekend with another sweep, beating Towson 7-0 in their first game of the day, followed by an eighth inning winning over UMass.
The Spartans began day two with a 7-0 win over Towson, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth and three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Hannah Houge pitched seven innings, surrendering one hit and no runs.
In a nail biting eight inning game, Upstate pulled out a 2-1 win over UMass as Marisa Soterakis scored the game winning run after a throwing error from the UMass third baseman. Alyssa Kelly pitched five innings surrendering six hits but delivering six strike outs. Adison Yoder closed out the remainder of the game, giving up no hits or runs on 25 pitches.

How It Happened

B4: Denver Lauer pinch ran for Peyton Darnell to start the bottom of the fourth inning and scored kicked off the Spartans runs after coming home off a single from Celeste Delorenzo.

B4: With Alexa Sanchez pinch hitting for Caroline Jacquay, Delorenzo stole second and Casey Goguts stole home to put Upstate ahead by two runs.

B4: Reentering after a Sanchez walk, Jacquay and Delorenzo advanced on a wild pitch before Marisa Soterakis employed a squeeze to bring home Delorenzo for the Spartans third run.

B4: Upstate scored its fourth run as Soterakis stole second with Jacquay coming in to score on a passed ball brought on by the stolen base attempt.

B6: With one out left, Madison Lanoux hit a double to left field to send Sarah Price, Emily Dixon, and Delorenzo home to put Upstate at 7-0.

T3: Abby Packard put UMass on the board with a walk to first, an advance to second off a wild pitch, singles from Bella Pantoja and Payge Suggs.

B6: Lanoux reached second base after a line drive down the left line and was brought home by Goguts who ended up at second after a hit to center field.

B8: With the game in extra innings, Price reached first base off a fielder's choice leaving Soterakis to make a run for third. Soterakis would hit home plate after a throwing error from the third baseman in an attempt to tag Soterakis out as she was caught between second and third.

As a pitching staff, Houge, Kelly, and Yoder combined to throw 15.0 innings Saturday across two games. The trio allowed just one earned run while striking out 14 batters on the day.
