Softball Caps Undefeated Weekend Behind Huge Day From Payton Darnell

Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate softball finished out Spartan Classic weekend with a 13-6 win over Towson, improving their record to 5-0 to start the 2022 season.  

The Spartans got an early jump on the Tigers going up 6-2 after the first four innings; it wasn't until Towson recorded four runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game that Upstate switched gears. In response to the top of the inning, Upstate once again took control of the game off a double from Sarah Price and Peyton Darnell's second home run of the day.

How It Happened  

  • B4: Peyton Darnell hit a double to right center, sending home Madison Lanoux and Casey Goguts to give Upstate an early 2-0 lead.  

  • B4: Emily Dixon came in as the pinch runner for Darnell starting at second base. With a stolen second base and an error from Towson's catcher, Dixon reached home to add to the Spartans lead. 

  • T3: Ally Hickman led off for Towson in the top of the third hitting a double down the right field line and advancing to third on Nicole Kidwilder's grounded out. Briana Ramirez's single sent Hickman home to put Towson on the board. 

  • B3: Lanoux hit a single through left side to start the bottom of the third, earning a run after Darnell stepped up and hit a home run to left field to extend Upstate's lead to four.  

  • B3: With the bases loaded Marisa Soterakis stepped up to pitch but was struck by the ball, advancing Tiffany Domingue to home plate making the score 6-1. 

  • T4: Sydni Byers reduced Upstate's lead back to four runs with a home run to left center.  

  • T5: Towson capitalized on having Kidwilder on third and Ramirez on second, earning two runs off a single to left center courtesy of Rylee Penrod. 

  • T5: Byers hit her second home run of the game, sending Penrod home and deadlocking the game at six runs each.  

  • B5: Upstate once again had the bases loaded as Sarah Price hit a double to left center improving the Spartan's score to 9-6. 

  • B5: Price scored her own run immediately after off of Soterakis' single down the right field line.  

  • B5: Darnell made the most of her final at-bat, hitting her second home run for the day, advancing Casey Goguts, and Maddie Lanoux to home plate, spiking the score to 13-6.  

   
Notable  

  •  Peyton Darnell recorded seven runs batted in, three hits, and two homers. 

  • Darnell finished out the weekend with 13 RBI, nine hits, four runs scored and four home runs. 

  • Adison Yoder had her second consecutive scoreless outing, striking out two and retiring nine of the ten batters she faced against Towson.  

  • Madison Lanoux finished the weekend 10-for-16 at the plate. 

  • Denver Lauer went 4-for-4 on the weekend in stolen bases attempts.
