Box Score CLEMSON, S.C. – Despite falling behind early as it hit the road for the first time during the 2022 season, USC Upstate baseball fought back to tie the game in the eighth before Clemson roared back in the bottom of the inning for an 8-5 victory Tuesday night.
Erasing a 5-0 deficit, the Spartans got back two runs in the fifth, a run in the sixth, and the final two in the eighth to tie the game as the offense backed the steadying presence of sophomore righthander
Trey Miller who came on in the first and tossed 4.2 innings of one-run baseball to keep Upstate within striking distance.

Scoring Summary
- B1: Striking first in the midweek contest, Clemson plated four runs to stake an early lead. Cooper Ingle plated the first run with an RBI single through the left side before Bryar Hawkins slugged a three-run homer to right.
- B2: The Tigers added another tally in the second as Caden Grice singled through the left side to deliver Clemson an early 5-0 lead.
- T5: The Spartans began chipping away in the fifth, eventually chasing Clemson starter Billy Barlow, as Devin Buckner drove home Jeff Taylor and Jack Hennessy who reached on a dropped third strike and a walk, respectively.
- T6: Upstate struck again in the sixth as Jace Rinehart stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter and delivered a double down the rightfield line to put two men in scoring position. The Spartans plated their run after Troy Hamilton and Damon Maynard drew back-to-back free passes to bring in a run.
- T8: The Spartans fought back to tie the game at five after taking advantage of two Clemson walks. With two men on, Noah Myers nestled a ball inside the leftfield line plating Grant Sherrod with an RBI double. Buckner drove in another Upstate run as he ground out to short, bringing home Maynard from third.
- B8: Breaking the tie, Clemson's Jonathan French hit a solo shot to left to give the Tigers a 6-5 lead. The Tigers Dylan Brewer added to the lead with a two-run homer to right to push the lead to three.
Notable
- Driving home three runs Tuesday night, Devin Buckner collected his fifth multi-RBI effort through eight games this season. The game also marked his fourth to see him drive in three or more runs in a single game.
- Finishing the game 2-for-3 while being hit by two pitches, Noah Sullivan reached base four times on the evening. Taking his two HBP, Sullivan has been hit by seven pitches through eight games this season, a total that leads the team.
