Upstate Softball Sports Pink for Support During Furman Sweep in a Mid-Week Double-Header at Cyrill Stadium

Spartanburg, S.C. – Upstate softball grit out two wins as they swept Furman in a Tuesday afternoon double-header at home. The Spartans walked away from Cyrill Stadium with a 1-0 win in game one followed by a late 5-3 comeback victory in game two. USC Upstate wore pink during the double-header to support all those affected by breast cancer.
   

The first game of the double-header began with a 0-0 first inning. In the second inning, Upstate was able to get on the board with an unearned run from pinch runner Celeste Delorenzo. Furman switched pitchers after 4.1 innings, while Upstate stuck to its guns and left Hannah Houge to ride out the game. Houge earned her 16th win of the season as she threw 130 pitches across 7.0 innings, surrendering no runs and four hits and recording nine strikeouts.   

In game two, Furman took an early lead, scoring one run in the first and two runs in the third. Alyssa Kelly started on the mound for Upstate and threw 42 pitches across 3.0 innings until she was relieved by Adison Yoder in the top of the fourth. Yoder achieved her second win of the season as she threw 60 pitched across 4.0 innings, surrendering no runs and three hits, recording three strikeouts. Upstate was able to not only tie the game in the fifth inning but secure a two-run lead before shutting out the Paladins in the last two innings.

How It Happened             

  • T1: Ludlam hit a double down the left field line to bring Morgan home from third base.  

  • T3: Morgan stepped up to bat as the second batter of the inning, hitting a home run to left center.  

  • T3: Laudick delivered a single to right field, allowing Bartlett to get home, giving Furman the 3-0 lead.  

  • B5: Marisa Soterakis hit a single, but advanced to second due to an interference from the Furman first baseman, while Denver Lauer advanced to third and Casey Goguts gave Upstate its first run of the game.  

  • B5: Soterakis advanced to third and Lauer came home shortly after as Sarah Price hit a single to first base 

  • B5: Madison Lanoux sent a single up the middle to provide enough time for Soterakis to get home, earning the run to tie the game.  

  • B5: Sarah Price gave Upstate the winning run as Tiffany Domingue was called out at first. 

  • B5: Madison Lanoux came home for the final run off a Furman wild pitch.  


Notable             

  • Adison Yoder earned her second win of the season (vs. UMass 2/12/22) 

  • Yoder also posted a season-high 60 pitches during game two 

  • Upstate tied its season high of SAC hits (2) for the fifth time during game one against Furman 

  • Houge has now pitched over 100 innings so far this season (101.1)
