Softball Takes to the Road to Battle Big South Competitors in Three-Game Series at Radford

Spartanburg S.C. - USC Upstate softball prepares to hit the road for the second time this season, as they take on Big South competitor Radford in a three-game series in Virginia. Upstate is coming off two wins against Furman to kick off the week.  
  

Upstate scored the lone run in game one against Furman as Celeste Delorenzo scored her 14th run of the season. Hannah Houge earned her 16th win of the season as well as her eighth shutout of the season with the 1-0 victory. Houge recorded nine strikeouts while surrendering no runs to the Paladins.  

Game two started with Furman scoring one run in the top of the first and two runs in the bottom of the third. Alyssa Kelly earned her 13th start this season as she pitched 3.0 innings, surrendering five hits and three runs. Adison Yoder relieved Kelly in the top of the fourth. Yoder threw 60 pitches across 4.0 innings, recording three strikeouts and surrendering no runs. Upstate achieved the comeback win, scoring five runs in the bottom of the fifth.  

Radford is coming off a mid-week double-header against JMU where they went 1-1 at home. Game one, Radford took the 10-2 win in six innings, whereas game two they fell 14-2 in five innings.  

Upstate has faced off against two Big South competitors so far, earning a 4-2 record. The Spartans took on Longwood in the second week of March, winning the series 2-1 and had a similar results last weekend against the 2021 Big South Conference Champions, Campbell, with two wins during their double-header Saturday but coming up short Sunday. Radford is 3-3 in the Big South after losing the series 2-1 to Presbyterian and winning the series 2-1 against Winthrop.

Players to Watch:        

USC Upstate (26-3, 4-2 Big South):        

Peyton Darnell has started all 29 games for Upstate with her primary starting position being the designated player. Darnell leads Upstate with a .713 slugging percentage after recording 11 runs, 25 hits, 10 home runs, 35 RBI and 57 total bases.   

Radford (10-13, 3-3 Big South):     

Cori McMillian leads Raford with a .358 batting average and a .836 slugging percentage. McMillian has started all 23 games for the Highlanders and has recorded 16 runs, 24 hits, nine home runs, 25 RBI, and 56 total bases.
