Spartans Sweep Highlanders in Double-Header to Kick Off Big South Three-Game Series

Radford, Va. – USC Upstate continued its winning ways by sweeping Radford in the first two games in the three-game series. 

Upstate took the early lead in game one, as Sarah Price put the first run on the board as she scored off a Radford throwing error. Peyton Darnell added two runs with a single up the middle, giving Upstate a three-run lead. Upstate added one more in the top of the fourth, keeping Radford scoreless until the bottom of the third. Tiffany Domingue secured the win for Upstate with a home run over the  left field wall. Hannah Houge recorded her 17th win of the season as she threw 131 pitches across 7.0 innings, throwing eight strikeouts.  

Domingue started game two the same way she walked off from game one, with a home run only this time over the center field wall. Celeste Delorenzo followed Domingue with a similar hit to center. A single from Mady Lanoux and two errors from Radford gave Upstate a 5-0 lead with the conclusion of the top of the second inning. Radford was able to avoid a shutout with a home run in the bottom of the third but was unable to come back for the win. Alyssa Kelly threw 87 pitches across seven innings, along with eight strikeouts, to earn her ninth win of the season.

How It Happened              

  • T1: Sarah Price earned the first run of the game off a throwing error by the Radford catcher.  

  • T1: Peyton Darnell hit a single up the middle allowing Domingue and Johnson to score, giving Upstate the 3-0 lead to finish out the first inning.  

  • T2: Alanna Deal extended Upstate's lead as she ran home as Sarah Price bunted for a single.  

  • B3: Madison Canady cut the Spartan's lead down to one run with a three-run homer to center field.  

  • T5: Tiffany Domingue hit a home run over left field to secure the win for Upstate.

How It Happened
              

  • T2: Tiffany Domingue hit her second home run of the day to put Upstate on the board in game two.  

  • T2: Celeste Delorenzo hit a home run as well, bringing pinch runner Liza Simmerson home with her.  

  • T2: Mady Lanoux hit a single to left field to advance Price to second. Soterakis advanced to third and made a run for home but was caught out, but not before Alanna Deal scored a run.  

  • T2: An error from the Radford shortstop allowed Summer Johnson to reach first, Lanoux to reach second, and Price to score, making the game 5-0. 

  • T5: Domingue hit a fly ball to right field and was called out, however Johnson was able to score off a Radford right fielder throwing error.  

  • B6: Cassi Barbato helped Radford avoid a shutout with a home run over left center.  

 
Notable              

  • Hannah Houge hit a new season-high with 131 pitches in game one. Houge nears 150 strikeouts, with her currently sitting at 147.  

  • Tiffany Domingue hit two home runs on the day, putting her at four for the season. 

  • Liza Simmerson recorded her fourth run on the season. 

  • Peyton Darnell leads the Spartans with 62 total bases.  

  • Sarah Price leads Upstate with 18 successful stolen bases (18-20).  

  • This is Upstate's fourth double-header sweep of the season.
