Box Score 2 ROCK HILL, S.C. - USC Upstate softball concluded the Winthrop Eagle Classic in winning fashion with a 9-1 win over Le Moyne followed by a 14-3 win over Mount St. Mary's to advance its overall record to 4-4.
The Spartans began the day with a 9-1 win over the Dolphins after six innings. Maddie Drerup earned her second start of the season and had six strikeouts on the day to help Upstate earn win number one of the tournament. Alanna Deal had an exceptional first game with two hits, two stolen bases, and three runs scored. Second baseman Abby Polk also had a strong performance with two hits, two stolen bases, and two runs scored. Upstate finished game one against Le Moyne with 10 hits, nine runs, and 10 stolen bases.
Game two was no different as the Spartans downed The Mount 14-3 in five innings. Upstate began slow with one run in the first, two runs in the second, and one run in the third. The Spartans opened the flood gates with an astounding nine runs scored in the fourth inning, including five consecutive runs scored. Sierra Maness earned her second win of the season after making her fourth start of the season. Maness finished the day with eight strikeouts to bring her season total to 34. Taliyah Thomas, Abigail Pippen, Morgan Langley, Denver Lauer, Carson Bradsher, Alanna Deal, and Cassie Norris all scored one run for the Spartans. Three Spartans were able to have a multi-run day including Amie Johnson with three runs, and Abby Polk and Celeste Delorenzo who scored two runs respectively.
UP NEXT FOR THE SPARTANS
Upstate will pause tournament play to host Wofford College for the first time ever on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. The Spartans will finish the week at home in Cyrill Stadium hosting Akron, Monmouth, and Kentucky Feb 23-25th.
