Softball Concludes Mid-Week Contests With Final Trip to Columbia Against South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – USC Upstate softball fell in its final mid-week non-conference of the season on Wednesday night in Columbia, S.C. to the South Carolina Gamecocks.  

In Wednesday night's contest, both the Spartans and the Gamecocks went scoreless through the first. South Carolina was able to stack one run in the second and third respectively before Upstate kept them off the board again in the fourth. Despite getting runners on base, the Gamecocks tallied three runs in the fifth, forcing the Spartans to fall 5-0. Celeste Delorenzo, Alanna Deal, and Amie Johnson recorded one hit each for the Spartans, keeping their respective hitting streaks alive. Abby Polk was able to extend her reached base streak to eight games while Deal extended hers to seven. Maddie Drerup made her 17th start of the season against the Gamecocks and faced 22 batters in her 5.0 innings pitched. Alyssa Kelly made her 15th appearance of the season as she relieved Drerup in the bottom of the sixth. In Kelly's 1.0 innings pitched, she had two strikeouts and surrendered no hits. Wednesday night's loss was only the third road loss Upstate has received this season

How It Happened 

  • B2: The Gamecocks got on the board first as a double to right center from Black advanced Ricks home from second (1-0).  

  • B3: South Carolina extended its lead to two runs after a solo homerun from Blampied (2-0). 

  • B5: Bryant made it a three-run game as she grounded out to Abby Polk but gave Gonzalez enough time to get home (3-0). 

  • B5: Laneaux pushed the Gamecock's lead to five as her homerun over right field brought Blankenship home from second (5-0).  

Notable 

  • This is Upstate's first contest with South Carolina since 2019.  

  • Alyssa Kelly has thrown no less than two strikeouts in each of her last four appearances.  

  • Wednesday night's game was the seventh game against a Power Five opponent this season. 

Up Next for the Spartans  

The Spartans will finish the regular season in Rock Hill, S.C. on Friday and Saturday against the Winthrop Eagles. Friday has been rescheduled as a doubleheader set for 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. while Saturday is set for a 2:00 p.m. first pitch.
