Closing Three-Game Stretch Against SoCon Foes, Women's Basketball Continues Homestand Against Samford Sunday

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Hitting the court for the first time following the university's exam week, USC Upstate women's basketball closes its three-game stretch against SoCon foes against Samford Sunday afternoon. The Spartans and Bulldogs meet for the second time in Upstate's Division I era (2007-pres.), last meeting on Nov. 30, 2023, a 57-52 Samford victory in Birmingham, Ala.
 
Upstate's clash with Samford also marks the first time under head coach Jason Williams that the Spartans have played on a Sunday, their first Sunday game since Dec. 19, 2021, at No. 19 Kentucky. Upstate's last Sunday home game came on Nov. 28, 2021, versus Mars Hill, with the last Sunday home game against a Division I opponent coming on Dec. 3, 2017, versus Furman.

Players to Watch
USC Upstate: Leading the Spartans with 11 points—her second double-digit scoring game of the season—behind 4-of-5 shooting, redshirt junior forward Vera Söderblom marked the lone Spartan in double-figures versus UNCG. Her 80.0 percent shooting mark pushed her season field goal percentage to a team-best 52.2 percent as she's connected on 24-of-46 attempts from the field. Söderblom also leads Upstate on the glass, leading the team and ranking sixth in the Big South in rebounds (6.5 RPG) and total rebounds (71), recording at least five boards in eight straight contests.
 
Samford: Heading a squad ranked 11th in the NCAA in three-point shot volume, sophomore guard Briana Rivera represents the nation's leader in three-point field goal attempts, firing 121 this season. She leads the country in three-pointers and three-pointers per game, making 45 at an average of 3.75 triples per game. Rivera leads Samford in scoring at 12.4 points per game, fuelled by a 37.2 shooting clip from beyond the arc.
