CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the first time during the 2025 season, USC Upstate baseball captured multiple conference weekly awards as Johnny Sweeney and Chris Torres both earned their first career Big South weekly honors, earning Player and Starting Pitcher of the Week, respectively, as the league announced its weekly winners Tuesday afternoon.
Â
A native of Millstadt, Ill., Sweeney reached base in 13 of his 14 plate appearances in the Spartans' sweep of Charleston Southern, recording a career-high-tying three hits in all three ball games as he went 9-for-10 at the plate. Five of his nine hits went for extra bases as he collected 20 total bases behind two doubles and three home runs, including his first career multi-homer game Sunday. On the weekend, he slashed .900/.929/2.000 while registering nine RBI and six runs scored.
Â
Torres, a West Springfield, Mass. native, secured his third quality start of the year as he worked 6.0 scoreless innings Sunday against the Buccaneers. He scattered five hits and eight baserunners while striking out a career-high 10, Upstate's second double-digit strikeout game by a starting pitcher this season. He struck out at least one batter in all six innings he pitched, including striking out the side in the fourth and ending his outing with back-to-back punchouts.
Â
Sweeney is Upstate's first Big South Player of the Week since April 29, 2024, when Koby Kropf earned the honor. Torres joins teammate Max Kaplan in earning Big South Starting Pitcher of the Week accolades this season.
