CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the second time this season, USC Upstate baseball finds itself with multiple Big South Conference weekly award winners as Johnny Sweeney and Trey Bentley captured Player and Freshman of the Week honors from the league Monday afternoon.
Â
A native of Millstadt, Ill., Sweeney captured his fourth career Big South Player of the Week accolade after leading the NCAA in total RBI last week, driving home 14 across the Spartans' three contests. He homered and drove home four or more runs in each game against Gardner-Webb, including finishing a triple shy of the cycle with six RBI in game two of the weekend series. Sweeney also took sole possession of the program's Division I era (2007-pres.) career record for home runs, slugging his 30th, 31st, and 32nd homers as a Spartan.
Â
Bentley, a Mulberry, Fla. native, earned his second Big South Freshman of the Week nod of the season as he posted a .500/.533/.857 three-slash line against Gardner-Webb. He paced the Spartans in hits with seven as he notched two doubles, a home run, five RBI, and five runs scored. He closed his weekend with a career-high three hits, two RBI, and two runs scored Sunday.
