OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – For the fifth time since the 2021 season, USC Upstate baseball finds itself with a member of the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List as Maloy Heaghney earned a spot on the list as the College Baseball Foundation announced its major award watch lists Wednesday afternoon.
Â
A native of Eureka, Mo., Heaghney boasts a .328/.435/.448 slash line through 14 games this season, collecting four doubles, one home run, 13 RBI, and 11 runs. One of three Spartans to start all 14 games this season, he's tied for the team lead with six multi-hit games this season, entering the weekend ranked third in the Big South with 19 hits.
Â
With his selection, Heaghney is the fourth different Spartan to appear on the watch list since 2021, joining Cole Caruso (2022), Troy Hamilton (2023-24), and Jason Matthews (2021). The award is named in honor of former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace who passed away at age 27 after a courageous battle with Leukemia, the Brooks Wallace Award has been given since 2009 to the nation's most outstanding shortstop.
