Box Score Spartanburg, S.C. - A freak accident caused the relay tower at the ESPN Spartanburg studios to fall and break, causing the radio station to be knocked off the air and forcing the cancellation of the radio broadcast of today's men's basketball game between Upstate and Lipscomb.
Fans not in attendance at today's game in the Hodge Center can still follow the action online at upstatespartans.com. Upstate offers live statistical updates and the game can be watched on ESPN3 and WatchESPN.
Early reports of the accident involving the tower show that a nearby homeowner was having a tree or part of a tree cut down. All or parts of the tree fell into power lines, which then fell into the tower, knocking the tower over and causing it to break.
Matt Smith, President of ESPN Spartanburg, said early Saturday that a determination of when the station will be back up and running should be completed quickly. Alternative plans for airing Upstate basketball games and the Upstate Basketball Coaches Show (every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.) will be worked out in the event the tower can not be repaired/replaced in time for next week's broadcasts.
