Errors Doom Upstate in Loss to Pittsburgh

Spartanburg, S.C. – Pittsburgh capitalized on three fielding errors and scored three unearned runs on its way to a 5-2 victory over USC Upstate Saturday afternoon from Harley Park.

Pittsburgh (4-1) scratched across a run in the top of the second inning to grab the early advantage. Panther shortstop Matt Johnson doubled to right field with one out and came around to score on the following play when Eric Hess reached on an error charged to the Spartan infield.

The Panthers added another run in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single off the bat of third baseman Jordan Frabasilio. Boo Vasquez reached on a one-out double to right field and moved to third one batter later on a fly out by Casey Roche. Frabasilio followed with a single to right to play Vasquez from third.

USC Upstate (3-4) cut the Pittsburgh deficit in half with a run in the bottom half of the fifth inning. Drew Fisher drew a walk to lead off the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Fisher came around to score on an RBI single up the middle by Justin Allen.

Two errors by the Upstate infield in the top of the sixth inning led to a pair of runs by Pittsburgh. Second baseman Dylan Wolsonovich and Vasquez picked up RBIs in the inning to put the Panthers ahead 4-2.

Upstate notched its second run of the game in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double from Zach Krider. Luke Weber walked to lead off the inning and raced home when Krider smacked a double to left field. Krider moved to third on a wild pitch, but Panther starter Rhys Aldenhoven responded by striking out the side to leave Krider stranded at third.

Pittsburgh added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a double from Nick Yarnall to up its lead to 5-2.

Aldenhoven earned the win after allowing two runs on five hits in six innings of work. Hobie Harris pitched the final three innings and got the save.

Upstate lefty David Roseboom was the tough luck loser after surrendering four runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out five in six innings of mound duty.  

The Spartans put the finishing touches on their weekend competition Sunday at noon against Butler from Harley Park.
