Starling, McAllister Record Double-Doubles as Upstate Downs North Florida 79-63

Brittany Starling and Valese McAllister each collected double-doubles Thursday evening as USC Upstate scored a 79-63 victory over the North Florida Ospreys in Atlantic Sun women's basketball action inside The Hodge Center.

The Spartans improve to 14-12 overall and 9-6 in the league, while the Ospreys fall to 5-21 on the season and 1-14 in conference play.

Starling earned her second straight double-double, and third in the last five games, as she finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds. She now has 10 double-doubles in her career. McAllister had a game-high 11 rebounds to go with 10 points as she picked up her second career double-double, which have come in the last three contests.

Starling and McAllister were two of four Upstate players to finish with 10 or more points on the night. Brittany Clency pitched in a game-high 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting while Sharmayne Edwards contributed 11 off the bench. Clency also added seven assists and Raven Jefferson dished out five.

Amber Robinson, Whitney Wright and Destinee Smith each had 10 points for North Florida, and Paulina Zaveckaite had a team-high nine rebounds.

Clency scored 12 of her 16 points in the first half as she connected on 5-of-7 attempts and was 2-for-2 behind the three-point line. The game was close for the opening 7:43 as the teams were tied 14-14 following a jumper by Ki Conner. Clency hit three of her first four shots, two of which were three's, and gave Upstate a 17-14 lead the next possession. Edwards quickly stretched the Spartan lead to 20-14 with 11:31 left after Alex Stanford forced Conner into a turnover.

Toni Romiti joined in with back-to-back three's to give Upstate a 28-18 lead with 6:35 to go. The Spartans finished the first half shooting 6-of-14 from three-pointer. Clency later gave Upstate a 16-point cushion at 34-18, and Lauren Bogle would extend the lead to 18, 40-22, on her jumper. McAllister kept the lead at 18 with 1:57 left, but Wright and Bre Crum combined for the final five points and sent the Spartans into halftime in front 42-29.

The Ospreys stayed within a 13-point deficit through the first four minutes of the second half until Upstate pulled away for good. A three by Jefferson at the 13:37 mark gave the Spartans a 57-35 advantage and would lead by more than 20 for a majority of the half. Edwards provided Upstate with its largest lead of the game, 77-54, after hitting two free-throws with 3:25 remaining.

Travonda Haddock finished the scoring for the Spartans on a jumper with 24 seconds remaining. Zaveckaite logged the game's final basket with 10 seconds left as Upstate picked up the season sweep of North Florida with the 79-63 win.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 42.7% (32-of-75) overall and 34.6% (9-of-26) from three-point range. The Ospreys shot 38.8% (26-of-67) as a team and 33.3% (4-of-12) behind the three-point line.

Upstate also outrebounded North Florida 45-43 leading to 17 second-chance points. The Spartans would take advantage of 20 Osprey turnovers and turn them into 22 points. Upstate held a 34-20 advantage in points from the bench.

The Spartans host Jacksonville Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in their final home game of the season. Upstate will also be recognizing McAllister prior to the game as part of its Senior Day festivities.
