Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's basketball team was unable to overcome a cold shooting night from the field as the Spartans lost 56-41 to Campbell in non-conference action at the Hodge Center on Thursday.

Campbell improves to 5-3 while Upstate drops to 5-7.

Tamera Thorpe led the Spartans with 12 points, followed by Riley Popplewell with 10 points. Vanessa Agrusa grabbed seven rebounds and had three steals.

Hannah Long led Campbell with 15 points, followed by Makala Rouse with 13 and Summer Price with 12. Brianna Cribb pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.

Game Breakdown

  • DeNisha Swain gave the Spartans a 2-0 lead 38 seconds into the game. The Camels led 14-10 at the end of a tightly contested quarter with five lead changes and four points being the largest lead by either team.
  • Campbell opened the second quarter on an 8-0 run, leading to an Upstate timeout at the 7:21 mark. After the Spartans cut the deficit to 22-12 following a Raven Jefferson layup with 6:23 remaining, the Camels outscored Upstate 10-7 the rest of the half for a 32-19 halftime lead.
  • After a Rouse layup gave the Camels a 42-25 lead at the 5:54 mark of the third quarter, the Spartans received six consecutive points from Thorpe to cut the lead to 42-31 with 3:32 remaining. Campbell led 44-33 at the end of the frame.
  • Upstate would get no closer than 12 points in the fourth quarter as neither team would score in the final 4:23 of the period.

By the Numbers

  • The Camels held a 44-33 edge in rebounds and outscored Upstate 38-20 in the paint.
  • Campbell shot 49.0 percent (25-for-51) from the field while Upstate finished 16-for-62 (25.8 percent).
  • The Spartans outscored Campbell 14-12 in the third quarter.
  • Upstate's bench players outscored the Campbell reserves 17-10.
