Charleston, S.C. – USC Upstate junior right-handed pitcher Tyler Jackson struck out a career-high 13 batters while limiting The Citadel to five hits as the Spartans snapped a three-game losing streak with a 7-1 victory over the Bulldogs
Upstate improves to 8-5 after snapping a three-game losing streak while The Citadel drops to 5-6.
J.J. Shimko went 2-for-5 with a pair of singles to lead the Spartan offense. Jake Beaver went 1-for-3 with a double and RBI. Daniel Fickas and Zach Krider each went 1-for-3 with a single and RBI. Jordan Ford and James Fowlkes each finished 1-for-4 with a single and RBI. Charlie Carpenter drove in two runs.
Mike Deese went 2-for-4 with a double, single and run scored. Drew Ellis went 1-for-4 with a single and RBI.
Deese reached on a single with one out in the first inning and scored on an Ellis single for a 1-0 lead. Upstate tied the game in the fourth inning after Fickas reached on a double and scored on a Carpenter sacrifice fly.
In the Upstate sixth, Krider reached on a base hit, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a Fowlkes base hit to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead. Upstate added five runs in the ninth. Jaden Savage began the inning with a walk and scored on a Beaver double. Shimko brought Beaver home with a double before another run would score as Fickas was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Upstate added two more runs on a fielder's choice and a groundout.
After allowing a run on two hits in the first inning, Jackson (2-1) allowed two runners to reach second base for the rest of the game. The 13 strikeouts top his previous best of 12 which he reached in his last start at Furman a week ago. Ryan Stamler took the loss as he allowed one run on two hits in two innings.
Upstate remains in Charleston on Wednesday, facing Charleston Southern at 6 p.m.
