CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Earning a save and victory in his first two collegiate appearances working out of the bullpen, USC Upstate baseball's Jacob Kirby earned his first career conference weekly award, being named Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week Tuesday, the Spartans' first weekly award winner of the season.
Â
A native of Waxhaw, N.C., Kirby combined for 7.0 scoreless innings over appearances against Western Carolina and Northern Illinois, earning a save and a win, respectively, in the two outings. He became the first Spartan since Mathieu Curtis in 2023 to earn a positive decision (win or save) in his first two collegiate appearances.
Â
Making his collegiate debut last Tuesday against the Catamounts, he worked three innings of one-hit baseball, striking out three to pick up the save. Returning Friday versus the Huskies, Kirby tossed four scoreless frames to earn the win, scattering four hits and six baserunners, while striking out three additional hitters. He also picked off a Huskie in his second outing of the year.
Â
Earning his first career conference weekly award, Kirby is the ninth different Spartan to earn a Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week honor, joining Max Bianchini, Jake Cubbler (four times), Kevin Davis (three times), Cooper Ellingworth, Austin Morgan (three times), Derek Sivec, Will Wheeler (twice), and Sawyer Worrell.
