Getting 7.0 Scoreless Frames From Its Bullpen, Baseball Captures Victory in 2-1 Pitchers' Duel at Stetson

DeLand, Fla. – Capping a two-game midweek slate against former ASUN compatriots, USC Upstate baseball's pitching staff, particularly its relief corps, shut the door against Stetson, leading the way in a 2-1 pitchers' duel Wednesday evening.
Â
Spartan pitching surrendered two hits and seven total baserunners to the Hatters, the squad's fewest hits allowed since tossing a two-hitter against UNC Asheville on May 15, 2025, a seven-inning affair. Relievers, redshirt freshman right-handed pitcher Jacob Kirby, freshman righty Andrew Kummer, junior right-hander Wyatt Land, and sophomore right-hander Cayden Mackey combined to work 7.0 scoreless innings from the pen, permitting one hit and allowing no Stetson knocks from the fourth onward.
Â
Earning their first career decisions, Kummer worked 2.0 scoreless frames, striking out two for the win while Mackey tossed a scoreless ninth, striking out one en route to the save. Redshirt junior right-handed pitcher Max Eichenberger earned the start, surrendering one hit and one run over 2.0 innings of work, punching out four, including the side in the second.
Â
Backing the Upstate pitching, Upstate's offense struck in the fourth inning as redshirt sophomore rightfielder Kenan Bowman delivered a single into center, tying the game. The Spartans gained the advantage in the seventh as redshirt sophomore centerfielder Henry Zenor ripped a double down the rightfield line.
Â
Zenor and fifth-year senior designated hitter Johnny Sweeney notched the Spartans' two multi-hit efforts, Zenor's night extending his team-best hitting streak to 10 games.

How It Happened
- B1: Scratching the day's first run, Stetson pushed across a run behind a Renzo Gonzalez single to right-center, seeing the run score before he was gunned down trying to extend his hit into a double.
- T4: Loading the bases with a pair of hits and a walk in the frame, Kenan Bowman tied the game and chased the Hatters' starting pitcher with a single into center, driving home Johnny Sweeney.
- T7: Following a one-out walk and stolen base from Gage Griggs, Henry Zenor delivered Upstate the lead as he ripped a double down the rightfield line, plating Griggs from second.
Notable
- Allowing two hits as a pitching staff against Stetson Wednesday, Upstate permitted its fewest hits in a game since posting a seven-inning, two-hitter against UNC Asheville on May 15, 2025. The Spartans permitted hit total against the Hatters marked the fewest hits allowed in a nine-inning contest since Feb. 22, 2025, versus Le Moyne.
- Registering his team-leading sixth multi-hit game of the season, Henry Zenor extended his team-best hitting streak to 10 games. The streak is the longest by a Spartan since Johnny Sweeney's 10-game hitting streak from April 19 to May 7, 2025.
