Lexington, S.C. – USC Upstate starter Blake Whitney allowed one run in five innings while the Spartan offense scored four runs in the third and sixth innings in a 10-4 victory over Charleston Southern at Lexington County Baseball Stadium on Tuesday night.
Upstate improves to 13-14 while Charleston Southern drops to 12-10.
Scoring Breakdown
- Top 3rd – Upstate opened the inning with a pair of singles to put runners on first and second. Charlie Carpenter drove home the first run of the game with a single followed by a J.J. Shimko double that plated another run. After a groundout and strikeout, Drake Harris drove in Carpenter and Shimko with a single to give the Spartans a 4-0 lead.
- Top 5th – The Spartans loaded the bases thanks to three walks. Jake Bourke gave Upstate a 6-0 lead thanks to a two-run single with two outs.
- Bottom 5th - Kyle Vesnesky and Cody Smith opened the inning with singles. Following a strikeout, Nate Blanchard doubled to score Vesnesky but Whitney got a pair of strikeouts to get out of the inning.
- Top 6 – Upstate took advantage of three Charleston Southern errors in the inning to score four runs. Hunter Gilbert reached on an error to open the inning and scored on a Carpenter single. After an error and fielder's choice loaded the bases, Russell Schwertfeger drove in a run with a single. Bourke hit his second two-run single of the game for a 10-1 Upstate lead.
- Bottom 6th – A walk followed by a strikeout and a pair of singles loaded the bases for Charleston Southern. The Buccaneers plated a run on a Smith sacrifice fly.
- Bottom 8th – A leadoff walk followed by a single and walk loaded the bases with no outs. The Buccaneers scored a run on a bases-loaded walk and another run on a double play.
Notables
- Whitney improved to 3-2 on the season after scattering five hits over five innings while allowing one run with a walk and six strikeouts.
- Tyler Weekly (2-2) took the loss as he allowed four runs on six hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 3.0 innings.
- Bourke went 2-for-4 with two singles and four RBI to lead the Spartans.
- Shimko scored a game-high three runs.
- Gilbert, Carpenter and Schwertfeger each had two hits as Upstate finished with 12 hits.
- Vesnesky and Mike Sconzo each had two hits to lead Charleston Southern.
- Charleston Southern left 12 runners on base while Upstate stranded 10 baserunners.
