Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis showed a lot of promise in their opening match against Wofford on Sunday afternoon despite falling by a final score of 7-0.
USC Upstate (0-1) came out swinging in doubles action as the Spartans No. 1 doubles tandem of
Elin Hellberg and
Maria Jardim jumped all over Wofford's (1-0) No. 1 team. Hellberg and Jardim got off to a 3-0 advantage and never looked back as they defeated the Terriers top tandem 6-2.
The Spartans No. 2 doubles team of
Roberta Armani and Gabriella Cevallos fell 2-6 and forced a winner take all match at the No. 3 doubles court. The Spartans No. 3 doubles duo of
Morgan Valentine and
Laura Illanes jumped out to an early lead over the Terriers at 3-2. Following the side change the Terriers took the lead back and held on for a 6-4 win. USC Upstate headed into singles action trailing 1-0.
In singles action the Wofford took the early advantage winning the opening set on every court. In the second set however, every Spartan held a lead at least once to put pressure on the Terriers. Hellberg was the only Spartan able to force a third and decisive set after winning the second set 6-4.
The USC Upstate women's tennis team will be back in action tomorrow afternoon against Furman University. The match will begin at 3:00 p.m. in Greenville, S.C., on the campus of Furman University.
