SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate softball team no-hit Maryland Eastern Shore on Friday afternoon at Cyrill Stadium in an 8-0 run-rule victory.
Kasey Widmyer (Moore, S.C.) started the game for USC Upstate (5-1) and threw four scoreless innings. The freshman struck out a quartet of Hawks in rout to her first career win. A single hit batter kept the Spartans from recording a perfect game.
Mallie Brown (Stockbridge, Ga.) pitched the final inning in relief to close out the game for the Spartans.
A leadoff homerun by
Sarah Price (Landrum, S.C.) set the tone for the Spartans offensively. USC Upstate scored six runs in the bottom of the third to take a commanding lead over the Hawks. Freshman
Tiffany Domingue (York, S.C.) drove in the game winning run with an RBI single to left field.
Scoring Breakdown
Bottom 1st: Sarah Price smacked a leadoff homerun over the centerfield fence to set the tone for the USC Upstate offense on Friday afternoon.
Bottom 3rd: Alyssa Oakes doubled to right field to begin the inning for USC Upstate.
Peyton Darnell roped an RBI single back up the middle to score Oakes from second. Moments later Darnell came around to score on an error by the Hawks second baseman.
Savannah Grigsby stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and delivered a bases clearing double to left field.
Tiffany Domingue picked up her first RBI of the afternoon with a single up the middle to make it a 7-0 game.
Bottom 5th: Heading into the bottom of the fifth the Spartans needed just one run to complete the 8-0 run-ruling of Maryland Eastern Shore. Grigsby singled to left field to begin the inning and then moved into scoring position following a
Cheyenne Nunez hit by pitch. Price sacrificed the runners up a base, setting Domingue up for the game winning hit. The freshman came through with the game winning hit to give the Spartans the victory.
Notables
This is the second walk-off victory of the season for USC Upstate. The Spartans picked-up their first run-rule victory and their first no-hitter of the 2020 campaign.
Savannah Grigsby went 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of runs and a trio of RBI's to lead the offense.
Tiffany Domingue was the only other Spartan to record a multi-hit and multi-RBI performance.
UP next for the Spartans
The USC Upstate softball team is back in action tomorrow afternoon against the University of Massachusetts and Oakland University. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. and the second game will follow a half-hour after the conclusion of the first game.
