SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate softball team is hosting the Wings ETC Classic this weekend at Cyrill Stadium as Maine, La Salle, Virginia and Tennessee Tech make the trip to the Hub City this weekend.
USC Upstate (8-2) is coming off just their second loss of the season after a 3-2 loss to Charlotte on Wednesday evening. The trip to Charlotte was also the first road test for the Spartans this season as the previous nine matches had all been played inside the friendly confines of Cyrill Stadium.
Last weekend the Spartans went 4-0 in the Spartan Classic with wins over Maryland Eastern Shore, Massachusetts, Oakland and Buffalo. This season USC Upstate has gone 6-1 in tournament games played Cyrill Stadium and since the start of 2016 the Spartans are 54-5 in home tournament matches.
The Spartans head into the weekend with one of the best pitching arsenals in the Big South Conference. USC Upstate boasts a league best 1.49 team era and opponents are hitting just .196 against the pitching staff this season.
Erin Hill,
Celina Sullivan and
Mallie Brown have pitched the bulk of the 67 innings this season for the Spartans. Hill leads the team in total strikeouts (28) and innings pitched (28.0), while Sullinvan has one of the lowest era's on the team at 1.05.
Kasey Widmyer has also recorded a few quality outings this season including a combined no-hitter against Maryland Eastern Shore last Friday.
On the offensive side
Savannah Grigsby has a team best .429 batting average and she is second on the team total hits (12) and RBI's (8). Grigsby is also tied for the most stolen bases (5) and runs scored (6) on the season.
Tiffany Domingue,
Max Barnes and
Peyton Darnell are having great rookie seasons so far for the Spartans. Domingue is second on the team in batting average (.424) but leads the team in total hits (14), doubles (4), RBI's (10) and total bases (21).
La Salle and Maine will be playing in their first games of the 2020 season this coming weekend. Tennessee Tech, meanwhile, is playing in their third consecutive tournament in the 2020 season. The Golden Eagles are 6-4 on the season and they are coming off a 7-5 win over Chattanooga on Sunday afternoon. Virginia is heading back down to the Palmetto State for a second consecutive weekend after playing in the Winthrop Tournament last weekend. The Cavaliers are 5-4 this season and they are coming off a loss to Boston University on Sunday afternoon.
