SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For the second straight season, USC Upstate men's golf—along with Wofford and this year South Carolina Charities, Inc.—continued to grow its collegiate golf tournament as play concluded Tuesday at The Carolina Cup supported by Proud Partners Taco Bell and the BMW Performance Driving School.
Hosted at Carolina Country Club, the event allowed each member of the Spartan program to compete on the team's home course with numerous individuals taking advantage of their familiarity with the golf course. Leading the way for the Spartans, junior
Zander Briggs tied his best career finish as he turned in scores of 74-78-73-225, tying for 44
th at the event.
Briggs wasn't the only Spartan to benefit from playing on his home course as freshman
Elias Becker tied for the second-highest finishing Spartan as he finished one stroke shy of his career-best 54-hole total, coming in at 229 behind round scores of 75-72-82, tying for 55th. His second-round 72 stands as the lowest individual round of Becker's young career while marking the lowest round score for a Spartan at The Carolina Cup.
Tying with Becker at 55
th on the leaderboard, senior
Brady Hinkle fashioned marks of 75-74-80-229 to round out the top-three Upstate finishers at the event. Just behind Becker and Hinkle, freshman
Christophe Palmans tied for 58
th—third highest among Spartans in the team lineup—as he wrote in scores of 79-78-73-230.
Overall, the second iteration of The Carolina Cup featured 15 teams and 90 total players, making it the largest field in the history of the event. In addition to the field size, the 2022 event saw numerous tournament records broken and was the first collegiate golf event broadcast by GameKast Live to feature live commentators with Mark Childress, Richmond Weaver, Faxon Childress, Brian Katrek, and Will Lowery providing coverage throughout the event.
