Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate baseball team dropped a 5-4 decision to Boston College and an 11-9 game to Army Saturday in a doubleheader from Harley Park.
Upstate used a two-run homerun from freshman Charlie Carpenter in the first inning of game one to jump out to a 2-0 lead. After Boston College cut the deficit in half with a run in the third, senior Erik Samples homered to right field in the bottom half to put Upstate back ahead by two runs.
An opposite homerun from sophomore Zach Krider in the sixth inning gave Upstate a 4-2 lead, but Boston College answered with three runs in the seventh to take its first lead of the game.
Justin Dunn allowed just one hit over the final three innings and earned the win in relief, giving up just one run on two hits in 4.1 innings of work. Starter Jesse Adams pitched the first 4.2 innings and surrendered three runs on five hits to go along with eight strikeouts.
Dylan Parker suffered the loss after giving up three runs in 1.1 innings. Starting pitcher Tyler Jackson lasted five innings and yielded one earned run and struck out four batters.
Game two saw Army jump out to a 5-0 lead after three innings, only to see Upstate respond with six runs in the fourth inning to go ahead by one run.
The Black Knights regained the lead with three runs in the fifth and another run in the sixth to take a 9-6 advantage. Jake Beaver cut the deficit to two runs with an RBI single in the seventh, but Army scored two more in the eighth to regain a three-run edge.
Upstate put the tying runs on in the ninth on a single from Erik Samples and a walk to James Fowlkes, but Johnny Griffith retired the final batter to earn the save and preserve the win.
Patrick Gardner earned the win in relief, going 2.1 innings and allowing just two hits and one unearned run. Zach Mitchell took the loss after giving up three runs (two earned) in one inning on the hill.
Upstate returns to the diamond Wednesday at 4 p.m. when the Spartans host Winthrop from Harley Park.
